Why do we love this wine?

When it comes to quality and consistency, Pirramimma is solid as a rock. They’ve been at it for almost 130 years, so it’s to be expected. This GSM is beautifully balanced, hitting all the right notes in terms of fruit, oak and tannin. The nose exhibits blackberry, plum and toffee, along with hints of pomegranate and cedar. On the palate there’s raspberry, more plum, cranberry and vanillin. We suspect this one will move faster than you can say GSM.

Wine Orbit

Wine Orbit

Richly fruited and enticing, the wine shows dark berry, vanilla, toasted spice and hazelnut aromas on the nose with a hint of cocoa. The palate delivers succulent fruit intensity and excellent weight, wonderfully supported by supple texture and layers of fine-grained tannins, finishing lingering and delicious.

"Another fine wine from that stellar 2021 vintage, this is the famous Rhone blend done in McLaren Vale. Deep mauve, there are lifted aromas with notes of plums, raspberries, cassis, mushrooms, spices and smoked meats. These carry on to the palate, which offers juicy acidity and a lingering finish. The wine is well balanced and offers sleek tannins. It surely will remain good drinking over the next eight to ten years. So much to like here. 2021 continues to prove itself as very special." - Ken Gargett

Ray Jordan

" Nails the style of modern Australian GSM blends. Bursts with a raspberry and cherry aroma buoyed with a little blackcurrant. The palate is medium-weight but intensely delivered with fine chalky tannins and a light touch of spicy oak. Everything cuddles up in perfect harmony. Neat little wine, here. Cellar: 8 years" - Ray Jordan, Wine Pilot

Frequently Asked Questions

GSM stands for Grenache, Syrah (Shiraz), and Mourvèdre - a classic Rhône Valley blend that's become synonymous with McLaren Vale excellence. This combination creates wines with Grenache's bright fruit and elegance, Shiraz's power and spice, and Mourvèdre's structure and earthiness. The blend allows winemakers to craft complex, balanced wines that showcase the best characteristics of each variety while creating something greater than the sum of its parts.

McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate and diverse soils create perfect conditions for these warm-climate varieties to thrive. The region's proximity to the ocean provides cooling influences that help retain acidity, while the warm days allow for full phenolic ripeness. This terroir produces GSM blends with intense fruit concentration balanced by natural freshness - exactly what you'll find in this Pirramimma expression with its complex interplay of dark fruits and savory elements.

Heritage Limited Edition wines typically represent a producer's finest expression of their winemaking philosophy, often using premium fruit from their best vineyard blocks. Given Pirramimma's 130-year history, this designation likely reflects their accumulated knowledge and access to mature vines that produce more concentrated, complex fruit. The 94-point Wine Orbit rating suggests this wine showcases exceptional quality that honors the estate's long winemaking tradition.

Serve this wine at cellar temperature (16-18°C) in large Bordeaux-style glasses to allow the complex aromatics to develop fully. The full-bodied nature and rich tannin structure make it perfect for hearty dishes like grilled lamb, beef stew, or aged cheeses. Consider decanting for 30-60 minutes before serving to help integrate the oak and allow the fruit flavors to open up, especially given the wine's youth and intensity.

Quality McLaren Vale GSM blends like this typically peak between 5-12 years from vintage, with the 2021 showing excellent structure for medium to long-term cellaring. The combination of ripe tannins, balanced acidity, and the wine's full-bodied nature suggests it will develop greater complexity over the next 3-5 years as the oak integrates and secondary flavors emerge. The 'Killer Vintage' rating indicates 2021 provided ideal growing conditions for extended aging potential.
