Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

When it comes to quality and consistency, Pirramimma is solid as a rock. They’ve been at it for almost 130 years, so it’s to be expected. This GSM is beautifully balanced, hitting all the right notes in terms of fruit, oak and tannin. The nose exhibits blackberry, plum and toffee, along with hints of pomegranate and cedar. On the palate there’s raspberry, more plum, cranberry and vanillin. We suspect this one will move faster than you can say GSM.

Frequently Asked Questions

GSM stands for Grenache, Shiraz, and Mourvèdre - a classic Rhône-style blend that's become synonymous with McLaren Vale excellence. This combination creates wines with remarkable complexity, where Grenache provides bright fruit and elegance, Shiraz adds structure and spice, and Mourvèdre contributes earthy depth and tannin backbone. The blend allows winemakers to craft wines that are both powerful and nuanced, explaining why it's become one of Australia's most celebrated red wine styles.

McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate, with warm days and cooling sea breezes from the nearby Gulf St Vincent, creates ideal conditions for GSM blends. The region's diverse soils and elevation changes allow each variety to ripen optimally, contributing to the wine's complex flavour profile of dark fruits, spice, and subtle oak integration. This terroir influence is evident in the wine's balance between power and finesse, with the maritime influence helping retain natural acidity while achieving full phenolic ripeness.

This textured, savoury GSM pairs beautifully with robust dishes that can match its intensity and complement its fruit-forward yet earthy character. Think grilled lamb with rosemary, beef bourguignon, or Mediterranean-style braised short ribs where the wine's plum and blackcurrant notes harmonise with rich, slow-cooked flavours. The wine's spice elements also make it excellent with barbecued meats, aged cheeses, and dishes featuring herbs like thyme and oregano.

With Pirramimma's 130-year winemaking heritage and this wine's full-bodied structure, the 2020 vintage has excellent cellaring potential of 8-12 years from vintage. The wine's balanced tannins and integrated oak will allow it to develop greater complexity over time, with the primary fruit flavours evolving into more tertiary characteristics like leather, tobacco, and dried herbs. However, it's also drinking beautifully now if you prefer the vibrant, youthful expression of the fruit.

Pirramimma's nearly 130 years of winemaking experience in McLaren Vale gives them an intimate understanding of how to craft GSM blends that showcase both varietal character and regional terroir. Their Heritage GSM demonstrates this expertise through its seamless integration of fruit, oak, and tannin - achieving the complexity that comes from precise blending and careful barrel selection. The wine's balance between power and elegance reflects the producer's commitment to consistency and quality that has defined their reputation across generations.
