Why do we love this wine?

From three of their best vineyards, including Ironstone, and some vines planted back in the 1950s, this wine shows off arguable the best vines of the region. Winemaker Geoff Johnston describes the wine as “a fine balance of the sweeter fine-tuned cassis of cabernet, with the plummy, blueberry and black cherry savoury notes of juicy shiraz. Couldn’t have said it better myself. If you’ve had the chance to enjoy any of the Pirramimma wine in the past, this is sure to impress.

"Anytime you see 2021 on a label for a red from McLaren Vale, your eyes should really light up. I can’t get enough of these wines and you should really be stocking plenty away. This is a deep blood red hue, with a nose exhibiting black fruits, chocolate, charred roast meats, a hint of tomato bush, spices, bay leaves and a core of sweet cherries when we move to the palate, through to hints of almond bitterness on the finish. There is still a little oak in evidence, but integration is proceeding well. There is good acidity, fine tannins and decent length here. The next six to eight years will see it drinking beautifully." - Ken Gargett

Frequently Asked Questions

This Heritage blend showcases the classic Australian approach of marrying Cabernet Sauvignon's structured cassis flavours with Shiraz's juicy plum and berry characteristics. The combination creates a more complex flavour profile than either grape could achieve alone, with the Cabernet providing backbone and tannin structure while the Shiraz adds generous fruit and approachable texture. This style of blending has been perfected in McLaren Vale over decades, making it one of Australia's signature wine styles.

Vines planted in the 1950s have developed extensive root systems that penetrate deep into McLaren Vale's diverse soils, accessing minerals and water sources younger vines cannot reach. These mature vines naturally produce smaller yields of more concentrated fruit, resulting in wines with greater complexity and depth of flavour. The age of these vines also means they've adapted perfectly to the local terroir, expressing the unique characteristics of McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate and varied geology.

The rich, full-bodied nature and dark fruit profile make this wine ideal for robust dishes like grilled lamb, beef steaks, or slow-cooked osso buco. The wine's balanced tannin structure can handle fatty meats and strong flavours, while its fruit-forward character complements dishes with earthy elements like mushroom risotto or aged hard cheeses. The plum and blackberry notes also pair beautifully with game meats and dishes featuring dark berry sauces.

McLaren Vale's unique combination of Mediterranean climate, diverse soils ranging from sand to ironstone, and proximity to the ocean creates ideal conditions for both Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. The region's warm days allow full ripening of these varieties while cool sea breezes preserve natural acidity and prevent over-ripening. The ironstone soils, particularly from the Ironstone vineyard mentioned, add mineral complexity and help produce the concentrated, age-worthy wines McLaren Vale is renowned for.

This 2021 Heritage blend is approachable now but will continue developing complexity over the next 8-12 years with proper cellaring. The full-bodied structure and quality fruit from old vines suggest excellent aging potential, with the wine likely to show increased integration of tannins and development of secondary flavours like leather, tobacco, and spice. Store in a cool, dark place at consistent temperature, and consider decanting for an hour before serving to fully appreciate its evolving character.
