Why do we love this wine?

This is a Halliday Dark Horse of the Year shortlisted producer - one of the most exciting under-the-radar names in the Yarra Valley right now - and this single vineyard pinot from a Steels Creek site planted in 1992 show us exactly why the wine world is starting to pay very close attention. Light, bright and wildly fragrant from the first sniff. Red cherry, pomegranate, incense and delicate florals on the nose, with an energetic, beautifully balanced palate that's all finesse and precision. Quietly powerful in the best possible way - the kind of pinot that reveals more and more the longer you sit with it... Go on, have a seat!

Frequently Asked Questions

This winery was shortlisted for Halliday's Dark Horse of the Year award, marking them as one of the most exciting emerging talents in the Yarra Valley. The recognition comes from their ability to craft wines that showcase the region's cool-climate elegance while maintaining exceptional quality-to-price ratios. Their single vineyard approach from established sites like this 1992-planted Steels Creek vineyard demonstrates the kind of terroir-focused winemaking that's putting Australian Pinot Noir on the global map.

Vines planted in 1992 are now over 30 years old, placing them in that sweet spot where they've developed deep, complex root systems but haven't yet reached the diminished vigour of truly ancient vines. This maturity allows for more concentrated flavour development and better natural balance, contributing to the wine's 'quietly powerful' character. The established vines also tend to be more resilient to vintage variation, helping explain why this wine achieved such consistent quality to earn 95 points from Halliday.

This phrase captures the essence of great cool-climate Pinot Noir - wines that don't rely on obvious extraction or heavy-handed winemaking to make an impression. Instead, the power comes from precision, balance, and the wine's ability to reveal layers of complexity over time in the glass. The light body doesn't mean lack of intensity; rather, it demonstrates the winemaker's skill in preserving the grape's natural elegance while allowing the Steels Creek terroir to express itself authentically.

The wine's light body and bright acidity make it incredibly food-friendly, particularly with dishes that won't overwhelm its delicate florals and red fruit character. Think roasted duck breast, mushroom risotto, or salmon with herbs - foods that complement rather than compete with the wine's finesse. The cranberry and raspberry notes also make it excellent with game birds or even vegetarian dishes featuring earthy ingredients like beetroot or lentils.

Serve this Pinot Noir slightly cool at around 14-16°C to preserve its bright, fragrant qualities while allowing the subtle complexity to unfold. Given the description mentions it 'reveals more and more the longer you sit with it', consider decanting for 30 minutes or simply let it breathe in the glass. Use a large bowl Burgundy glass to concentrate those delicate florals and incense notes, and don't rush - this is clearly a wine that rewards patience and contemplation.
