Geelong is, for me, the best pinot noir producing region outside of Burgundy. Not the USA's Oregon, not New Zealand's Central Otago - little old Geelong on Victoria's south coast.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Fresh and inviting, this will give a lot with just a little swirl in the glass. Raspberry coulis, winter strawberry, some sweet spice, fennel, thistle. The complexity far outpaces its price tag. The wine is structured without sacrificing finesse, which means it's pretty without being thin or wussy. This is dangerous value at under $20 and worth stocking up because we don't anticipate we'll be able to hang onto it too for long.

Frequently Asked Questions

This 2024 Pinot Noir delivers complexity that far exceeds its sub-$20 price point, offering layers of raspberry coulis, winter strawberry, and sweet spice with fennel and thistle notes. The wine achieves the difficult balance of being structured yet refined - avoiding the common pitfall of light-bodied wines that sacrifice substance for elegance. It's from a Five Star Halliday rated winery in Geelong, a region known for producing premium Pinot Noir that typically commands much higher prices.

This Pinot Noir responds beautifully to a gentle swirl in the glass, which releases its inviting aromatics and enhances the raspberry and strawberry fruit characters. Serve it slightly below room temperature (around 14-16°C) to preserve its fresh, elegant character while allowing the sweet spice and herbal complexity to shine. The wine's light-bodied nature makes it perfect for casual drinking, but its structural integrity means it can also handle slightly richer foods than typical light reds.

The wine's raspberry and sour cherry flavours, combined with its herbal fennel and thistle notes, make it incredibly food-friendly for both light and medium-weight dishes. Try it with roasted chicken, duck breast, or salmon where the wine's acidity will complement the richness without overwhelming delicate flavours. The sweet spice elements also work beautifully with mushroom-based dishes, charcuterie, or even slightly spiced Asian cuisine where the wine's elegance won't compete with complex seasonings.

Geelong's cool maritime climate and volcanic soils create ideal conditions for Pinot Noir, producing wines with the variety's signature elegance while maintaining good structure and complexity. The region's proximity to Port Phillip Bay moderates temperatures, allowing for slow, even ripening that develops the delicate fruit flavours and herbal characteristics evident in this wine. Geelong Pinot Noirs are increasingly recognised for their ability to express terroir while remaining approachable, making this sub-$20 example particularly remarkable value.

This 2024 Pinot Noir is designed for immediate enjoyment and showcases the fresh, vibrant character that makes young Pinot Noir so appealing. While it has enough structure to develop over 2-3 years, its current expression of raspberry coulis and winter strawberry is at its peak freshness. Given the exceptional value and the likelihood of limited availability, it's perfect for current consumption or short-term cellaring, where you can enjoy its evolution from bright fruit to more complex secondary characters.
