This is a clever wine, in a lot of ways. We're not above begging to get our hands on great pinot noir at the moment, and when we end up with wines like this it all feels worth it.

Why do we love this wine?

If you’ve been paying attention, you’ll know that Aussie pinot noir is hard to get your hands on. The last few vintages have been tough, and getting maximum flavour with a minimal pricetag is a near impossible task. One clever way to build texture and complexity in pinot noir is to partially ferment the whole berry clusters. The producer of this wine employed this method with 30% of the fruit before letting the wine age in 50% new French oak. What’s in the bottle is elegant, yet concentrated. Fruit is expressed as cherries, plums and strawberries and there are secondary notes of spice and earth. You’ll feel semi-serious drinking this lovely pinot, even if it is a Tuesday night in your PJs.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine showcases the sophisticated winemaking techniques that elevate Adelaide Hills Pinot Noir above the challenges facing Australian producers in recent vintages. The use of 30% whole berry fermentation creates additional texture and complexity - a method where intact grape clusters ferment alongside crushed grapes, contributing to more nuanced tannin structure and aromatic intensity. Combined with 50% new French oak aging, this approach delivers the concentrated yet elegant style that makes Adelaide Hills one of Australia's premier cool-climate regions for Pinot Noir.

Whole berry fermentation, used for 30% of this wine's fruit, creates a more complex flavour development through carbonic maceration within the intact berries. This process enhances the wine's cherry and strawberry characteristics while contributing to its textured, savoury style. The technique also helps preserve the delicate fruit aromatics that Pinot Noir is famous for, while adding layers of spice and earthiness that develop as the wine opens in your glass.

The wine's medium body and textured, savoury profile make it incredibly versatile with food, particularly dishes that complement its cherry and plum fruit with spice and earth notes. Think roasted duck with cherry sauce, mushroom risotto, or grilled salmon with herbs - the 50% new French oak provides enough structure to handle richer preparations without overwhelming delicate flavours. The wine's elegant concentration also makes it excellent with aged cheeses or charcuterie for a more casual pairing.

Recent challenging vintages across Australia's cool-climate regions have significantly impacted Pinot Noir production, making quality examples increasingly scarce and expensive. Weather events, including bushfires, floods, and unpredictable growing seasons, have reduced yields and forced producers to be more selective with their fruit. This scarcity makes wines like this Adelaide Hills example particularly valuable, as they demonstrate that skilled winemaking can still achieve maximum flavour and complexity despite these industry-wide challenges.

The exceptional scores of 96 points from Wine Orbit and 95 points from Wine Showcase, along with multiple gold medals, position this wine among Australia's elite Pinot Noir offerings. These ratings reflect not just the wine's immediate appeal, but its technical excellence and aging potential - particularly impressive for a 2022 vintage that's still developing. The recognition from both domestic and international competitions (including China Wine & Spirits Awards) demonstrates the wine's broad appeal and world-class quality standards.
