This is Tassie Pinot Noir at its absolute best. 95 points from James Halliday plus a Special Value Award is proof you're getting elite-level wine without the horrendous price tag. Ripe cherry and mulberry aromatics lead to a silky palate packed with dark berry fruit and subtle game complexity. Gutsy yet sleek. Wonderful stuff.

Why do we love this wine?

This Tamar Valley Pinot Noir 2021 is exactly why Tasmania has become Australia's premier region for the variety (block your ears Yarra Valley - we still love you). The colour alone tells you this is serious Pinot - striking ruby with crimson hints that catch the light beautifully. On the nose, ripe cherry and mulberry dominate, lifted by cinnamon spice and those savoury, gamey notes that separate great pinot from merely good pinot. The palate is where this wine really shines. Mouth-filling flavours of ripe raspberry and strawberry flow seamlessly into dark berry complexity, all supported by fine, silky tannins that coat your mouth without overwhelming. There's enough acidity to keep everything balanced and give definition to a finish that just keeps going and going and going - long and persistent, with lingering fruit that makes you reach for another sip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tasmania's cool maritime climate creates ideal conditions for Pinot Noir, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly while retaining natural acidity and developing complex flavours. The island's unique terroir produces wines with exceptional colour intensity and the distinctive savoury, gamey characteristics that define premium Pinot Noir. This 2021 vintage perfectly demonstrates why Tasmanian Pinot Noir has gained international recognition for rivalling Burgundy's finest expressions.

A 95-point score from James Halliday represents exceptional quality, placing this wine in the top tier of Australian Pinot Noir. The additional Special Value Award indicates outstanding quality-to-price ratio, making it a rare find in today's market. Halliday's scoring system is particularly respected for Pinot Noir evaluation, as he understands the variety's complexity and judges wines against international benchmarks rather than just domestic competition.

Serve this wine slightly below room temperature at 14-16°C to highlight its silky tannins and fruit complexity without masking the delicate aromatics. Decanting for 30 minutes will help open up the savoury, gamey notes and allow the cherry and mulberry characteristics to fully express themselves. Use a large-bowled Burgundy glass to concentrate the aromatics and enhance the wine's impressive colour presentation.

The wine's medium body and silky tannins make it perfect for duck breast, lamb rack, or wild game dishes that echo its natural gamey characteristics. The bright acidity and berry flavours also pair beautifully with mushroom risotto, aged hard cheeses, or salmon prepared with herbs. The wine's complexity means it can handle both rustic preparations and refined cuisine, making it versatile for various dining occasions.

Premium Tasmanian Pinot Noir like this typically peaks between 5-8 years from vintage, meaning this 2021 will be at its best through 2026-2029. The wine's excellent structure, balanced acidity, and fine tannins suggest it will develop additional complexity with careful cellaring. Store it in a cool, dark place at consistent temperature, and you'll be rewarded with enhanced tertiary flavours and even silkier texture as it matures.
