This is Tassie Pinot Noir at its absolute best. 95 points from James Halliday plus a Special Value Award is proof you're getting elite-level wine without the horrendous price tag. Ripe cherry and mulberry aromatics lead to a silky palate packed with dark berry fruit and subtle game complexity. Gutsy yet sleek. Wonderful stuff.

Why do we love this wine?

This Tamar Valley Pinot Noir 2021 is exactly why Tasmania has become Australia's premier region for the variety (block your ears Yarra Valley - we still love you). The colour alone tells you this is serious Pinot - striking ruby with crimson hints that catch the light beautifully. On the nose, ripe cherry and mulberry dominate, lifted by cinnamon spice and those savoury, gamey notes that separate great pinot from merely good pinot. The palate is where this wine really shines. Mouth-filling flavours of ripe raspberry and strawberry flow seamlessly into dark berry complexity, all supported by fine, silky tannins that coat your mouth without overwhelming. There's enough acidity to keep everything balanced and give definition to a finish that just keeps going and going and going - long and persistent, with lingering fruit that makes you reach for another sip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tasmania's cool maritime climate creates ideal conditions for Pinot Noir, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly while retaining natural acidity and developing complex flavour profiles. The island's latitude and oceanic influence mirror the climate of Burgundy, where Pinot Noir originated. This 2021 Tamar Valley example demonstrates Tasmania's mastery with its striking ruby colour and seamless balance of fruit intensity and elegant structure that rivals the world's best Pinot regions.

The exceptional rating reflects this wine's complete expression of terroir and varietal character. The combination of intense fruit concentration with fine, silky tannins and persistent finish demonstrates masterful winemaking. James Halliday's Special Value Award indicates this wine punches well above its price point, delivering premium quality that would typically cost significantly more from established regions like the Yarra Valley or international benchmarks.

Serve this wine at 14-16°C to showcase its complex aromatics and silky texture - too cold and you'll mute the beautiful cherry and spice notes, too warm and the elegant structure becomes flabby. Decant for 30 minutes to allow the wine to open up and reveal its full spectrum of flavours. The medium body and balanced acidity make it versatile with food, from roasted duck to mushroom risotto or even grilled salmon.

The wine's ripe berry fruit and savoury, gamey notes make it perfect for dishes with earthy complexity like roasted lamb with herbs, duck confit, or wild mushroom dishes. The bright acidity cuts through rich foods while the silky tannins won't overpower delicate proteins like pork tenderloin or salmon. For cheese pairings, try aged cheddar or soft-ripened varieties that echo the wine's creamy texture and fruit-forward character.

While delicious now, this wine's excellent structure and persistent finish suggest it will develop beautifully over 5-8 years in proper cellar conditions. The fine tannins and balanced acidity provide the backbone for graceful ageing, where the primary fruit flavours will evolve into more complex secondary notes of leather, earth, and forest floor. Store at 12-14°C in a dark environment to preserve the wine's elegant character and allow it to reach its full potential.
