The Coal River Valley is a jewel in Tasmania's fast emerging global wine reputation. This pinot noir is fine boned and finessed, but still meaty and potent. The scale of production however is small and boutique, so it's a 'get it while you can' kinda deal.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

This is no muckin' about pinot - ethereal and light but not lacking in depth and oomph. It’s packed full of elegant raspberry, strawberry and thyme aromatics that seem to evolve right there in the glass. The palate is marked by black cherry, oregano, thyme and cured meats. There’s brightness, a savoury undertone and enough acid to carry the finish. Absolutely delicious pinot good to go right now but with a bit of tie left in the tank, especially if you want to see that herbal, savoury finesse develop further.

What is a Black Market deal?

Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article – absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tasmania's cool maritime climate creates ideal conditions for Pinot Noir, producing wines with exceptional elegance and finesse that rival Burgundy. The island's pristine environment and temperature variations allow for slow ripening, resulting in wines like this 2021 that showcase delicate fruit aromatics alongside complex savoury elements. This particular bottle demonstrates Tasmania's ability to craft Pinot Noir with both ethereal lightness and surprising depth - a hallmark of the region's premium producers.

Serve this wine slightly chilled at 14-16°C to enhance its elegant raspberry and strawberry aromatics while preserving the delicate herbal notes of thyme and oregano. Use a large Burgundy glass to allow the evolving aromatics to develop, and decant 30 minutes before serving if you want to accelerate the wine's natural evolution. The wine's bright acidity and savoury undertones make it perfect for pairing with duck, salmon, or mushroom-based dishes that complement its cured meat characteristics.

Cult producer status indicates this winery has achieved legendary reputation among wine enthusiasts, typically through consistently exceptional quality and limited production. These producers often have waiting lists and command premium prices due to their track record of creating wines that age beautifully and represent the pinnacle of their region's potential. This single vineyard Pinot Noir from a cult Tasmanian producer suggests meticulous vineyard management and winemaking expertise that justifies the wine's premium positioning.

While this wine is absolutely delicious now, it has additional ageing potential that will reward patient cellaring. The description mentions 'a bit of tie left in the tank', suggesting the wine will develop further complexity over the next 3-5 years. Proper cellaring will allow the herbal and savoury elements to integrate more fully, while the bright fruit characteristics will evolve into more complex tertiary flavours. Store in a cool, dark place at consistent temperature for optimal development.

Light body doesn't mean simple flavours - in fact, the best light-bodied Pinot Noirs showcase incredible complexity through layered aromatics and nuanced palate development. This wine demonstrates how skilled winemaking can extract maximum flavour intensity while maintaining elegance, combining bright fruit (raspberry, strawberry, sour cherry) with savoury herbs (thyme, oregano) and umami elements (cured meats). The wine's structure allows these diverse flavour components to shine individually while creating a harmonious, evolving tasting experience that's both accessible and sophisticated.
