Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Single vineyard pinot noir from one of Marlborough’s first vineyards, going back almost 150 years. The region is best known for its sauvignon blanc, but ask any winemaker there what gets their heart racing and they’ll tell you it’s pinot noir. This one has an intensely layered nose of black cherry, plum, dark chocolate and cedar, which is backed up on the palate with more cherry and plum, fine tannins and graphitey minerality all wrapped up in a silky package. An amazingly complex wine that’ll make you wonder why pinot noir isn’t the most famous grape from Marlborough.

What is a Black Market deal?

Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article – absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.

Frequently Asked Questions

While Marlborough built its international reputation on crisp Sauvignon Blanc, the region's cool climate and diverse soils actually create exceptional conditions for Pinot Noir. Many local winemakers consider Pinot Noir their passion project, as it allows them to express the region's terroir complexity in ways that Sauvignon Blanc cannot. This particular wine comes from one of Marlborough's pioneering vineyards with almost 150 years of history, demonstrating the region's untapped potential for premium red wines.

Single vineyard wines showcase the unique characteristics of one specific site, rather than blending grapes from multiple locations. This Pinot Noir expresses the distinct terroir of one of Marlborough's oldest vineyard sites, resulting in the complex layers of black cherry, plum, and graphitey minerality described. The 95-point Wine Orbit rating reflects how successfully this wine captures its vineyard's individual personality, offering a more focused and authentic expression than multi-vineyard blends.

Serve this wine slightly below room temperature, around 16-18°C, to highlight its silky texture and complex aromatics. The medium body and fine tannins make it versatile for food pairing - try it with duck, lamb, or mushroom-based dishes that complement the dark chocolate and cedar notes. Decanting for 30 minutes will help open up the intensely layered nose and allow the graphitey minerality to shine through.

This flavour profile indicates a more structured, savoury style of Pinot Noir rather than a light, fruit-forward expression. The combination of dark fruits (blackberry) with red fruits (strawberry) and warming spice (allspice) suggests excellent vintage conditions and skilled winemaking. These notes, combined with the described dark chocolate and cedar characteristics, point to a wine with both immediate appeal and aging potential that bridges elegance with intensity.

The 2021 vintage is drinking beautifully now, showing the complex integration of fruit, tannins, and oak that earned it 95 points. However, given its single vineyard pedigree and textural complexity, this wine has excellent cellaring potential for 5-8 years. The fine tannin structure and graphitey minerality will continue to evolve, developing more tertiary flavours while maintaining the silky texture that makes it so appealing in its youth.
