Pinot but with more power. This is a bit special to be honest. A really smart wine capturing the elegance and poise of a great pinot noir whilst adding a bit of grunt. Medium to full bodied with a good lick of oak and evident but graceful tannin. Who said you can't have pinot with steak?

Why do we love this wine?

The 2020 vintage in Central Otago got off to a scary start, an exceptionally cool start to the growing season had winemakers and punters alike questioning the ability of the grapes to ripen effectively, and then came the sun. 6 weeks of near perfect weather allowed fruit to ripen at its own pace and ultimately produced some absolutely fantastic wines. This is an example of those wines. Ripe fruit, silky, ever-present tannins and that graphite characteristic that let's you know that you're definitely drinking a Central Otago pinot noir. Delicious.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2020 vintage in Central Otago began with an unusually cool growing season that initially worried winemakers about grape ripening. However, six weeks of near-perfect weather later in the season allowed the fruit to ripen at its own natural pace, creating ideal conditions. This extended, gentle ripening period resulted in wines with exceptional balance and complexity, showcasing the region's ability to produce outstanding Pinot Noir even in challenging years.

This Pinot Noir displays the distinctive graphite characteristic that's become a hallmark of Central Otago wines, reflecting the region's schist soils and continental climate. The combination of ripe fruit flavours with silky tannins demonstrates how Central Otago's dramatic temperature variations between day and night help preserve acidity while allowing full flavour development. This terroir expression, combined with the region's reputation as New Zealand's premier Pinot Noir region, creates wines with both power and elegance.

Michael Cooper's 97-point score and five-star rating represents exceptional recognition from New Zealand's most respected wine critic, indicating this wine ranks among the country's finest Pinot Noirs. Cooper's ratings are particularly significant for New Zealand wines as he focuses exclusively on domestic producers and has decades of experience evaluating the country's wine regions. A score this high suggests the wine demonstrates outstanding complexity, balance, and aging potential that sets it apart from typical Central Otago offerings.

Serve this wine slightly below room temperature at around 14-16°C to highlight its elegant, lighter style and silky tannin structure. The light-bodied nature means it pairs beautifully with dishes that won't overpower its delicate fruit characteristics - think roasted duck, salmon, or mushroom-based dishes. Decanting for 30-60 minutes before serving will help open up the wine's complex aromatics and allow the graphite minerality to integrate with the sour cherry and vanilla notes.

The herbaceous nettles note pairs excellently with dishes featuring fresh herbs like thyme or rosemary, while the sour cherry character complements game birds, lamb, or cherry-glazed pork. The vanilla undertones, likely from oak aging, create harmony with dishes that have subtle spice or cream-based sauces. Consider pairing with wild mushroom risotto, herb-crusted rack of lamb, or even aged hard cheeses where the wine's acidity can cut through richness while the vanilla adds complementary warmth.
