This one's a bit serious. Pinotphiles of all shapes, sizes, cultures and creeds can all agree on one thing: the Yarra Valley produces some bloody good pinot noir. Generous, soft and complex - this'll get you there.

Why do we love this wine?

The 2019 vintage brought somewhat warm conditions, for the Yarra at least, and the result is soft yet generous pinot noir with wonderfully crisp acidity and enduring fruit. Think ripe cherries and fresh strawberries with an underlying earthiness and lingering velvety tannins. This has Yarra Valley pinot written all over it and with 6+ years under its belt, this little number is raring and ready to go.

Halliday Wine Companion

Halliday Wine Companion

Planted in Nillumbick with the oldest fruit now 45 years old. Some (10%) whole bunches with 14 days on skins before being pressed off into 35% new oak for 8 months. Deeply coloured. A powerful wine with maraschino cherry, dark plum and a touch of spice. Concentrated and plush, the red and black fruits are joined by a dusting of dark chocolate powder, with velvety tannins rounding out a powerful yet well-weighted wine that I imagine will look even better 5–10 years from now.

Frequently Asked Questions

At 6+ years of age, this 2019 Pinot Noir has been carefully cellared beyond its typical release window, allowing it to develop complex secondary characteristics that younger wines simply can't offer. Museum releases represent wines that have reached optimal drinking maturity, where the initial fruit intensity has evolved into more nuanced flavours and the tannins have softened beautifully. This extended ageing means you're getting a wine that's ready to drink now at its peak, rather than needing further cellaring.

The Yarra Valley's cool climate and diverse soils create ideal conditions for elegant Pinot Noir, and this wine exemplifies the region's signature style perfectly. The valley's temperature variations between day and night help preserve the bright acidity that balances the ripe cherry and strawberry fruit, while the underlying earthiness comes from the region's ancient volcanic and sedimentary soils. This terroir expression is what gives Yarra Valley Pinot Noir its distinctive personality - fruit-driven yet sophisticated, with that characteristic mineral backbone.

Single vineyard wines like Lance's Vineyard represent the purest expression of a specific site's terroir, rather than a blend from multiple locations. This focused approach allows the winemaker to showcase the unique characteristics of one particular plot - its soil composition, microclimate, and aspect - resulting in greater complexity and distinctiveness. Single vineyard designations are typically reserved for premium sites that consistently produce exceptional fruit, making them a mark of quality and authenticity in winemaking.

Cult producers earn their reputation through consistently exceptional winemaking, often with limited production that creates high demand among wine enthusiasts and collectors. These producers typically focus on quality over quantity, sourcing from premium vineyard sites and employing meticulous winemaking techniques that result in wines with distinctive character and ageing potential. The cult status reflects both the technical excellence of their wines and their ability to capture the essence of their chosen regions, making their releases highly sought after by those in the know.

Serve this Pinot Noir slightly below room temperature at around 16-18°C to allow its delicate aromatics and medium-bodied structure to shine without being overwhelmed by warmth. The wine's soft tannins and crisp acidity make it incredibly food-friendly - try it with duck, salmon, mushroom dishes, or aged cheeses to complement its earthy undertones. Given its maturity and developed character, decanting isn't necessary, but allowing it to breathe in the glass for 15-20 minutes will help the cherry and strawberry notes fully express themselves.
