This particular wine has many parallels with Burgundy - from the latitude, planting density and finer points of the terroir, even down the winemaking practices. Not to mention the flavour... gee whiz, we've got a serious pinot noir on our hands here. It makes sense once you see the name on the label - you'll get what we mean.

Why do we love this wine?

This aged Mornington pinot takes a clear position - fully de-stemmed in defiance of the whole-bunch obsession dominating Aussie pinot lately. Sometimes courage means zigging when everyone zags. A medium-bodied entry leads to a supple palate where red cherry, rhubarb and winter strawberry overlay forest floor earthiness, dried herbs, gamey notes and spicy cedar. Polished, silky tannins feel deliberate, slaty and genuinely thirst-quenching, melding with enduring natural acidity to elongate the whole affair very impressively. Again, we can't tell you the name of the producer... but we reckon you'll be weak at the knees once you get a glance at that label!

Frequently Asked Questions

This producer deliberately chose full de-stemming to create a different style profile, focusing on pure fruit expression rather than the herbaceous, spicy characters that whole-bunch fermentation typically adds. De-stemming allows the red cherry and strawberry flavours to shine more prominently while still maintaining the wine's textural complexity. This approach demonstrates that there's no single 'correct' way to make Pinot Noir, and sometimes the best wines come from producers who trust their own vision over current trends.

The Mornington Peninsula's cool maritime climate, influenced by Port Phillip Bay and Bass Strait, provides the long, slow ripening season that Pinot Noir demands. The region's red volcanic soils and limestone subsoils contribute to the wine's natural acidity and mineral backbone, while the moderate temperatures preserve the delicate aromatics that make Pinot Noir so appealing. This terroir combination explains why this 2019 vintage shows such impressive balance between fruit intensity and earthy complexity.

The 2019 vintage in Mornington Peninsula was marked by ideal growing conditions with a warm, dry summer that allowed for excellent fruit concentration while maintaining natural acidity. At five years of age, this Pinot Noir has developed the secondary characteristics like forest floor earthiness and gamey notes that only emerge with proper cellaring. The vintage's quality foundation combined with careful ageing has created a wine that perfectly balances youthful fruit vibrancy with mature complexity.

A 95-point Halliday Wine Companion rating places this wine in the 'outstanding' category, representing less than 5% of all wines reviewed. Combined with the producer's Five Red Star rating, this indicates consistent excellence across their entire range, not just a one-off success. James Halliday's scoring system particularly values wines that express their regional character authentically, suggesting this Pinot Noir is an exemplary representation of premium Mornington Peninsula winemaking.

The wine's medium body and savoury earthiness make it perfect for duck breast with cherry sauce, where the fruit flavours create harmony while the wine's gamey notes complement the meat's richness. The silky tannins and natural acidity also pair beautifully with mushroom-based dishes, aged cheeses, or herb-crusted lamb, where the wine's forest floor characteristics enhance earthy flavours. The polished texture means it won't overpower delicate preparations, making it versatile enough for both casual and fine dining occasions.
