Why do we love this wine?

The 2018 vintage of this wine that we sold a little while ago absolutely rocketed out the door, and we expect the same will happen here. This well-known Victorian producer sources three different pinot clones from a little vineyard in the Yarra, whole-berry fermenting them separately. The batches are then aged in a mix of old and new French oak for a year before a final blending. The final product is opulent on the nose with ripe strawberries and cherries paired with truffle and forest floor. The velvety palate carries its acid well and hints at even greater developments after a few years of age, when more earthy characteristics will peek through.

What is a Black Market deal?

Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article – absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Yarra Valley's cool climate and diverse soil types create ideal conditions for Pinot Noir, allowing the grape to develop complex flavours while retaining natural acidity. This particular wine showcases the region's signature style with its combination of ripe fruit characters and earthy undertones. The producer's use of three different Pinot clones from a single vineyard adds layers of complexity that reflect the Yarra's terroir beautifully.

Whole-berry fermentation involves fermenting grapes without crushing them first, which creates a gentler extraction process and preserves the wine's natural fruit character. This technique is particularly beneficial for Pinot Noir as it maintains the grape's delicate structure while adding subtle spice notes through carbonic maceration. The result is a more elegant, velvety texture with enhanced aromatics - exactly what you'll find in this medium-bodied expression.

While this wine is drinking beautifully now with its opulent strawberry and cherry flavours, it's designed to evolve gracefully over the next 5-7 years. The combination of quality fruit, balanced acidity, and French oak aging means the earthy characteristics mentioned will become more prominent with time. For immediate enjoyment, decant for 30 minutes, but patient collectors will be rewarded with increased complexity and integration.

The wine's velvety texture and balanced acidity make it incredibly food-friendly, particularly with duck, lamb, or mushroom-based dishes that complement its earthy undertones. The ripe fruit flavours pair beautifully with roasted vegetables or charcuterie, while the truffle and forest floor notes enhance game meats perfectly. Its medium body won't overpower delicate fish like salmon or tuna, making it more versatile than heavier reds.

Different Pinot Noir clones contribute unique characteristics - some offer more colour and structure, others provide aromatic intensity or specific flavour profiles. By fermenting three clones separately before blending, the winemaker can craft a more complex final wine that captures the best attributes of each clone. This approach is common among premium Burgundian producers and shows the Victorian maker's commitment to creating a sophisticated, layered Pinot Noir.
