This particular wine has many parallels with Burgundy - from the latitude, planting density and finer points of the terroir, even down the winemaking practices. Not to mention the flavour... gee whiz, we've got a serious pinot noir on our hands here. It makes sense - once you see the name on the label, you'll see what we mean.

Why do we love this wine?

This aged Mornington pinot takes a clear position - fully destemmed in defiance of the whole-bunch obsession dominating Aussie pinot lately. Sometimes courage means zigging when everyone zags. A medium-bodied entry leads to supple palate where red cherry, rhubarb and winter strawberry overlay forest floor earthiness, dried herbs, gamey notes and spicy cedar. Polished, silky tannins feel deliberate, slaty and genuinely thirst-quenching, melding with enduring natural acidity to elongate the whole affair very impressively.

Frequently Asked Questions

This winemaker deliberately went against the current Australian trend of whole-bunch fermentation, opting instead for fully destemmed fruit. This technique typically produces cleaner, more fruit-forward wines with softer tannins and less vegetal character. The result here is a polished, silky wine that showcases the pure fruit expression of Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir without the sometimes aggressive tannins that whole bunches can contribute.

After six years of bottle age, this wine has evolved beautifully beyond its primary fruit character. The red cherry and strawberry notes have integrated with complex secondary flavours like forest floor earthiness, dried herbs, and gamey undertones. This development showcases why 2018 is considered a 'Killer Vintage' - the wines have the structure and balance to reward patient cellaring while maintaining their elegance and drinkability.

The Mornington Peninsula's cool maritime climate, influenced by Port Phillip Bay and Bass Strait, creates perfect conditions for Pinot Noir. The region's moderate temperatures allow for slow, even ripening that preserves natural acidity while developing complex flavours. This wine exemplifies the region's signature style with its combination of bright red fruit, earthy complexity, and that distinctive slaty minerality that comes from the peninsula's unique soils.

James Halliday's 95-point score places this wine in the 'outstanding' category, reserved for wines of exceptional quality and character. Coming from a Five Red Star rated producer adds even more credibility, as this ranking represents consistent excellence across their entire range. Such high scores from Australia's most respected wine critic indicate this is a wine that will age gracefully and represent excellent value, especially as a Black Market Deal.

Serve this wine slightly below room temperature (14-16°C) to highlight its elegant structure and complex aromatics. The wine's savoury, textured profile with gamey notes and forest floor earthiness makes it perfect for duck, lamb, or mushroom-based dishes. The natural acidity and silky tannins also complement aged cheeses beautifully, while the wine's thirst-quenching quality means it's equally enjoyable on its own for contemplative sipping.
