Developed, complex, rich and savoury. This is a prime example of well-made, well-aged Yarra pinot. Powerful enough to compliment a wide range of cuisine, subtle enough to show some well-kept secrets without a meal. A real pinot-lovers' pinot.

Why do we love this wine?

From the new generation of the original Diamond Creek Wines, an incredibly well-respected brand that established themselves (and their site in St Andrews) as one of the go-tos for Yarra Valley pinot in the mid 70s. This has immediate richness and serious exuberance. Black cherry, ripe strawberry, subtle earthen spice and smoky-savoury character to lift it above the masses of fragrant pinots out there. The palate is intense and textural with all the right amounts of sweetness, sourness and char. Will definitely appeal to a cross-section of pinot drinkers for its fragrance and depths, without being too over the top. It’s a wine of depth, complexity and class.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine showcases the evolution of Diamond Creek's winemaking since their pioneering days in the mid-70s, delivering exceptional intensity and textural complexity that sets it apart. While many Yarra Valley pinots focus purely on fragrance, this 2016 combines immediate richness with smoky-savoury elements and earthen spice, creating a more structured and age-worthy expression. The full-bodied palate weight is unusual for pinot noir, indicating concentrated fruit and skilled winemaking that balances sweetness, acidity, and tannin integration.

As a museum release, this wine has had nearly eight years to develop tertiary characteristics that enhance its complexity beyond the primary fruit flavours. The black cherry and strawberry notes have likely integrated with the smoky-savoury elements, while the earthen spice has become more pronounced and harmonious. Pinot noir from quality Yarra Valley sites typically reaches peak drinking between 5-10 years, making this 2016 perfectly positioned in its optimal drinking window with both youthful vibrancy and mature sophistication.

The exceptional rating reflects the wine's rare combination of immediate appeal and long-term cellaring potential, which Halliday particularly values in Australian pinot noir. The textural intensity and layered complexity - from ripe fruit through to smoky-savoury nuances - demonstrates masterful winemaking that elevates it above standard regional examples. Single vineyard designation also indicates site-specific character expression, while the balance of fragrance and depth appeals to both traditional and modern pinot noir preferences.

The wine's textural intensity and savoury complexity make it ideal for richer dishes than typical pinot noir pairings. Duck confit, lamb with herbs, or mushroom-based dishes will complement the earthen spice and smoky elements beautifully. The black cherry and plum characteristics also work exceptionally well with game meats or aged cheeses, while the wine's structure can handle grilled salmon or tuna without being overwhelmed.

This museum release is drinking beautifully now, having reached the sweet spot where primary fruit, secondary development, and tertiary complexity are perfectly integrated. The full-bodied structure and 94-point rating suggest it has the backbone to continue evolving for another 3-5 years, potentially developing more forest floor and leather notes typical of aged Yarra Valley pinot. However, the current balance of richness and refinement makes it equally rewarding for immediate consumption.
