Serious pinot drinkers know the good stuff can cellar for years and years. This 12-year-old stunner proves this theory in the most delicious way possible. Slippery and smooth and only just starting to dip into tertiary territory, this will easily continue to go for many years to come. We're drinking now with fatty meats, this has the guts to handle it!

Why do we love this wine?

With a 40% new French oak profile, this wine was described by some as muscular and tightly coiled in its youth. Well, while it's still got some serious heft behind it, the 12 years of careful cellaring has softened the brash bravado, and a more elegant and refined wine has emerged, much to its betterment. The velvety tannins and spice have softened, the deep broody fruit has beautifully integrated into earthy layered complexity, all while providing harmonious balance with the supple acid.

Frequently Asked Questions

Museum releases represent wines that have been carefully cellared by the winery for extended periods to reach optimal drinking condition. This 2013 Pinot Noir has undergone 12 years of professional cellaring, transforming from its initially muscular and tightly wound character into a refined, elegant wine with beautifully integrated flavours and softened tannins. The extended ageing has allowed the wine to develop the complex earthiness and harmonious balance that makes it worthy of museum status.

Initially aged in 40% new French oak, this wine started with bold, brash oak characteristics that dominated its youth. Over the 12-year cellaring period, the oak has seamlessly integrated with the fruit, contributing to the wine's current velvety texture and spice complexity rather than overpowering it. The oak now provides structural support and subtle vanilla-spice notes that complement rather than compete with the evolved fruit flavours.

The Yarra Valley's cool climate and diverse soil types create perfect conditions for Pinot Noir that can develop complexity over time. The region's temperature variations allow for slow, even ripening that builds natural acidity - essential for long-term cellaring. This wine's ability to transform from muscular youth to elegant maturity demonstrates how Yarra Valley Pinots can reward patience, developing the earthy, layered complexity that the region is renowned for.

Fresh cherry and cranberry notes in young Pinot Noir typically evolve into more complex, nuanced expressions with age. In this 12-year-old wine, those bright red fruit flavours have likely developed into deeper, more concentrated expressions with secondary characteristics like forest floor, mushroom, and dried herbs. The spice component has also mellowed from sharp pepper notes to warm, integrated spicing that enhances rather than dominates the evolved fruit profile.

This evolved Pinot Noir's velvety tannins and earthy complexity make it perfect for dishes that can match its sophistication without overwhelming its elegance. Think duck breast with cherry sauce, mushroom risotto, or aged hard cheeses that echo the wine's developed flavours. The wine's balanced acidity and integrated spice also complement game birds, roasted lamb, or even salmon with herbs, allowing both the food and wine's nuanced characteristics to shine.
