Think of it this way, pinot meunier is pinot noir's fun cosuin from out of town. We don't see them as much as we should, but when we do, we have a really great time. Pinot characteristics in abundance but darker, earthier, lighter, fresher. Highly recommended for anyone who likes Burgundy or Mornington pinot noir.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

A gorgeous ruby in the glass, this pinot meunier is autumn in a bottle - charry, earthy, and packed with fruit-forward charm. Think forest floor and churned earth working off dark cherry and cranberry. On the palate, it’s juicy and supple with bursts of red cherry, raspberry and rose water, backed by bright acidity and framed by fine, powdery tannins. The savoury French oak is beautifully integrated, there's structure the fruit is not overshadowed. Five years in, it’s showing both youthful energy and serious pinot sensibility. A wildly elegant, quietly complex wine - especially at this price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Pinot Meunier is actually one of the three main grapes used in Champagne, but when made as a still red wine like this 2020, it offers a unique middle ground between Pinot Noir's elegance and more robust reds. It typically shows more immediate fruit charm and softer tannins than Pinot Noir, while maintaining that distinctive earthy, forest floor character that makes it perfect for the cool climate of Mornington Peninsula.

The Mornington Peninsula's cool maritime climate and diverse soils create perfect conditions for Pinot Meunier to develop complexity while retaining bright acidity. The region's proximity to Port Phillip Bay moderates temperatures, allowing for slow ripening that builds the wine's characteristic balance of fruit intensity and savoury earthiness. This terroir particularly suits varieties that need extended hang time to develop their full flavour profile.

Serve this Pinot Meunier slightly below room temperature, around 14-16°C, to highlight both its fruit vibrancy and structural elements. The wine's medium body and bright acidity make it incredibly food-friendly - try it with duck, mushroom risotto, or aged hard cheeses. Decanting for 30 minutes will help open up the earthy, forest floor notes and integrate the French oak even further.

At five years old, this 2020 Pinot Meunier is hitting a sweet spot where primary fruit flavours are beautifully integrated with secondary development from bottle ageing. The wine shows both youthful energy in its bright cherry and raspberry notes, plus emerging complexity from the interaction between fruit, oak, and time. This balance suggests the wine has several more years of drinking pleasure ahead, with potential for further savoury evolution.

This represents exceptional value for a single vineyard, small batch Pinot Meunier from a boutique producer in premium Mornington Peninsula. The combination of careful French oak integration, five years of bottle development, and the rarity of well-made still Pinot Meunier makes this significantly underpriced compared to similar quality Pinot Noir from the region. It's an opportunity to experience a less common but equally sophisticated expression of cool climate Australian winemaking.
