This is a seriously smart offering. Regional spice and minerality with a generously expressive bouquet of dark fruit, well intergrated oak and soft, fine tannins to leave you hanging on every sip. For this price, you're laughing all the way to the barbecue.

Why do we love this wine?

If you were hanging out in South Australia in the 1880’s, you’d know Pikes for their beers. Fast forward 100 years and and several generations and the Pike family has firmly established themselves as one of the premier wine producers in the Clare Valley. Hops and grapevines, a rather abstract take on the tradition family tree. Their Settler’s Cottage shiraz speaks loudly of the Clare style; bracingly fresh, with aromas turned up to full volume and strikingly fine tannins. This is savoury, sumptuous, superb shiraz.

Frequently Asked Questions

Clare Valley shiraz is renowned for its distinctive freshness and elegance, contrasting with the power-driven styles of regions like Barossa Valley. The cooler climate and unique terroir produce wines with bracingly fresh acidity, intense aromatics, and remarkably fine tannins. This Pikes example perfectly demonstrates the Clare style - it's savoury and textured rather than fruit-forward, offering complexity that develops beautifully with age.

Serve this wine at 16-18°C to showcase its savoury complexity and fine tannin structure. The medium body and textured profile make it incredibly food-friendly - it pairs beautifully with grilled lamb, aged cheeses, or hearty mushroom dishes. Consider decanting for 30 minutes to allow the mocha and mulberry flavours to fully express themselves, especially given the wine's excellent aging potential.

The Pike family's journey from 1880s beer producers to Clare Valley wine pioneers reflects Australia's evolving drinking culture. After a century in brewing, they recognised the exceptional potential of Clare Valley's terroir for premium wine production. This generational shift demonstrates their deep understanding of fermentation and quality production, skills that translate beautifully from hops to grapes and contribute to their current five-star winery status.

Absolutely - Clare Valley shiraz is famous for its aging potential, and this 2019 is drinking beautifully now but will continue developing for another 8-12 years. The fine tannin structure and savoury profile suggest it will gain complexity and integration over time. The mocha and plum notes will evolve into more earthy, leather-like characteristics while maintaining that signature Clare Valley freshness that makes these wines so distinctive.

The combination of 4.0 Vivino rating, Five Red Star Halliday status, and Five Stars Wine Orbit recognition indicates exceptional consistency and quality across different evaluation criteria. These ratings span consumer preference (Vivino), professional Australian wine assessment (Halliday), and international wine evaluation, suggesting this shiraz appeals to both casual drinkers and serious wine enthusiasts. The single vineyard designation adds another layer of quality, indicating fruit sourced from one exceptional site.
