This is a wine that truly typifies, even defines, a region. There's an old saying that Margaret River produces 20% of Australia's wine and receives 80% of Australia's wine awards. Well, we reckon Pierro is winning 80% of those awards - a conservative estimate.

Why do we love this wine?

The 2020 vintage in Margaret River was warm and generous, and this red has soaked it all up in the best way possible. It’s a classic Bordeaux blend - cabernet sauvignon for structure, merlot for plush richness and a juicy mid-palate, and a dash of cabernet franc to lift it all with perfume and finesse. Think blackberry, tomato leaf and plum wrapped in fine, velvety tannins with hints of pomegranate molasses, bay leaf and subtle peppercorn. There’s even a savoury olive tapenade note dancing around in the background, adding intrigue. It’s smooth, concentrated, and totally food-friendly. Pierro never lets you now.

Frequently Asked Questions

L.T.C.F. likely stands for 'Little Touch of Cabernet Franc', reflecting the small but crucial addition of this varietal to the blend. Cabernet Franc is prized in Bordeaux-style blends for its ability to add aromatic lift, herbal complexity, and structural finesse without overwhelming the primary cabernet sauvignon base. This naming convention highlights Pierro's attention to the nuanced role each grape plays in creating the final wine's character.

The warm, generous 2020 vintage in Margaret River has produced a wine with exceptional concentration and richness, evident in the plush merlot component and intense blackberry flavours. Warm vintages typically result in riper tannins and more forward fruit expression, which explains the wine's velvety texture and immediate approachability. The vintage's generosity also allows the complex savoury elements like olive tapenade and bay leaf to develop alongside the fruit, creating a beautifully balanced expression of place and time.

This wine follows the traditional Left Bank Bordeaux model where cabernet sauvignon provides the structural backbone, merlot adds mid-palate richness and approachability, and cabernet franc contributes aromatic complexity and elegance. The blend proportions mirror those found in prestigious Bordeaux estates, where each varietal serves a specific purpose in creating harmony and complexity. Margaret River's maritime climate and gravelly soils make it one of Australia's most successful regions for replicating this classic French style.

The wine's savoury olive tapenade notes and medium body make it perfect for Mediterranean-inspired dishes like herb-crusted lamb, grilled portobello mushrooms, or aged hard cheeses. The velvety tannins and tomato leaf characteristics complement dishes with umami richness such as slow-braised beef with herbs or duck confit. The pomegranate molasses hint suggests it would pair beautifully with Middle Eastern cuisine featuring lamb tagines or grilled meats with pomegranate glazes.

Pierro's status as both an 'Iconic Producer' and '5 Star Red Halliday Rated Winery' reflects decades of consistent excellence in Margaret River winemaking. Their reputation stems from meticulous vineyard management and a deep understanding of how Bordeaux varietals express themselves in this unique terroir. This pedigree means the L.T.C.F. benefits from estate fruit selection, precise blending decisions, and winemaking techniques honed over generations, resulting in the wine's remarkable balance of power and finesse.
