Why do we love this wine?

Founded in 1976, Petaluma was born from the idea that the best wines can only be crafted when planting the right varieties, in the right regions. And it is when these prerequisites are met, that you'll be able to craft a singular expression that represents that region to its fullest. It is this longstanding philosophy that has allowed Petaluma to be so successful and so well regarded. Drinking this cabernet is like taking a tour with this philosophy as you enjoy the famed terra rossa soils of the Coonawarra. Crank the oven up, get a roast happening and pop a bottle. You'll be in gastronomic heaven.

Things came together rather well in 2018 and this Cabernet and Merlot blend is an outstanding example of the vintage. Expertly crafted to highlight the dark fruits, while fusing traces of cedar and dark chocolate with a hint of mint. Fine chalky tannins with a slightly oyster shell edge. The oak is neatly integrated, with its fine grain a feature. Has excellent cellaring potential.

Frequently Asked Questions

Coonawarra's famous terra rossa soil is a thin layer of iron-rich red clay over limestone bedrock, creating perfect drainage while retaining essential nutrients. This unique geological combination forces Cabernet Sauvignon vines to develop deep root systems, concentrating flavours and creating the structured, age-worthy wines the region is renowned for. The limestone subsoil also contributes to the wine's natural acidity and mineral backbone, which perfectly complements the blackberry and cedar notes in this Evans Vineyard expression.

Receiving 96 points from Ray Jordan and 95 points from Andrew Caillard places this wine in the exceptional category, representing less than 1% of wines produced globally. These scores indicate a wine with outstanding complexity, perfect balance, and significant ageing potential. The consistency across multiple respected critics, including Langton's 'Outstanding' classification, suggests this vintage has achieved the singular regional expression that Petaluma has pursued since 1976.

The wine's full-bodied structure and cedar-spice profile make it ideal for rich, protein-heavy dishes that can match its intensity. Classic pairings include slow-roasted lamb with rosemary, aged beef steaks, or game meats where the wine's tannins complement the meat's richness. The allspice notes also work beautifully with dishes featuring warm spices or herb crusts, while the blackberry fruit provides a counterpoint to savoury, umami-rich preparations.

Premium Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon from exceptional vintages like 2018 typically reaches peak drinking between 8-15 years from vintage, meaning this wine is entering its optimal window now through 2033. The combination of Petaluma's winemaking expertise, the structured tannins evident in the full-bodied profile, and the vintage's critical acclaim suggest it will continue developing complexity for another decade. Proper cellar conditions will allow the cedar and spice elements to integrate further with the blackberry fruit.

Evans Vineyard represents Petaluma's philosophy of matching specific varieties to optimal sites within Coonawarra's diverse terroir. This particular vineyard likely sits on some of the region's most prized terra rossa strips, where the soil depth and drainage create ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon's slow, even ripening. The single-vineyard designation indicates fruit selection from this specific site's unique microclimate and soil composition, resulting in a more focused expression than regional blends.
