Why do we love this wine?

Coonawarra cabernet. A decade plus cellar time. Iconic producer. 96-point Halliday rated. Brilliant vintage. There's a lot to love. But beyond all that is a wine that's truly expressive of time and place. Red and black fruit overlays earthy forest floor and fruit leather. Some cedar and toasty notes speak to the quality of the oak profile. The wine is mid weight - near delicate - but still maintaining assured power through the finish. Some fennel and eucalypt mark the wine as distinctly Coonawarra. Mid palate merlot softness and a touch of shiraz for jubey fruit juiciness. This purposeful and pure - what a wine.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2012 vintage was exceptional in Coonawarra, producing wines with remarkable balance and longevity. This Petaluma release showcases the region's signature eucalyptus and fennel characteristics while demonstrating how premium Coonawarra cabernet blends develop complexity over a decade. The vintage's natural acidity and structured tannins have allowed the wine to evolve beautifully, integrating the oak and revealing the distinctive terra rossa terroir that makes Coonawarra Australia's premier cabernet region.

Evans Vineyard represents some of Petaluma's finest Coonawarra holdings, where the famous terra rossa soil over limestone creates ideal drainage and mineral complexity. This specific site produces cabernet with the region's hallmark eucalyptus and fennel notes, while the limestone subsoil contributes to the wine's elegant structure and ability to age gracefully. The vineyard's positioning allows for optimal ripening while retaining the natural acidity that gives this blend its refined, medium-bodied profile rather than the heavier style often associated with warmer regions.

The addition of merlot provides crucial mid-palate softness and roundness, balancing cabernet's natural structure and tannins for a more approachable drinking experience. Shiraz contributes what's described as 'jubey fruit juiciness', adding vibrant berry flavours and enhancing the wine's overall fruit expression. This thoughtful blending approach is classic Coonawarra winemaking, where small percentages of complementary varieties create more complex, harmonious wines than single varietals alone, while still maintaining the region's distinctive cabernet character.

A 96-point Halliday rating places this wine in the 'outstanding' category, representing exceptional quality that's rarely achieved. Halliday's scoring system is particularly respected for Australian wines, and this rating indicates the wine demonstrates perfect varietal expression, regional character, and winemaking excellence. The additional 'Special Value' designation suggests the wine offers remarkable quality relative to its price point, while Petaluma's Five Red Star winery status confirms their consistent ability to produce wines of this calibre across their range.

After more than ten years of careful cellaring, this wine has evolved from primary fruit flavours into complex secondary and tertiary characteristics. Expect integrated cedar and toast from quality oak, alongside developed flavours of fruit leather and forest floor earthiness that speak to proper bottle maturation. The tannins have softened considerably while maintaining structure, and the wine now shows the delicate yet powerful balance that only comes with time, displaying Coonawarra's signature eucalyptus and fennel notes in perfect harmony with the evolved fruit profile.
