Blewitt Springs is McLaren Vale's worst kept secret. Deep sandy soils, elevated sites, and an uncanny ability to produce Grenache of extraordinary delicacy and purity - it's no surprise to us that Penny's Hill have just pulled a 95pt Halliday Review for this single-vineyard stunner!

Why do we love this wine?

These vines have been growing here for 75 years, rooted deep into those signature sands, hand-tended through every season. The fruit they produce is something else entirely. 25% whole bunches in the ferment, seven months in seasoned French puncheons, and the result is grenache that's all about fragrance and finesse. Redcurrant, crushed raspberry, strawberry and floral lift upfront - the kind of nose that stops you mid-conversation - with red liquorice, white pepper and a thread of fine silty tannin adding composure and direction underneath. It's vibrant and pure, with a tension and minerality that keeps every sip interesting. 95 points from Marcus Ellis in the 2026 Halliday Wine Companion. He called it "very good." We'd call that an understatement.

Halliday Wine Companion

Halliday Wine Companion

"From a two-hectare 76-year-old estate block in Blewitt Springs on typically deep sands. This was fermented with 25% whole bunches, then matured in older French puncheons for seven months. Those sandy soils are writ large on the nose, which is so fragrantly lifted and expressly red fruited and floral scented. It would be easy to get carried away and be seduced by that alone, but there’s a serious pulse to this, too, with a thread of fine silty tannin and a seasoning of darker spices. In short, it has oodles of charm equalled by cool composure and savoury refinement. It’s very good. 95 Points" - Marcus Ellis, Halliday Wine Companion

Frequently Asked Questions

This grenache showcases the elegance and finesse that old vines can achieve when handled with restraint. Unlike the bold, powerful reds McLaren Vale is famous for, this wine emphasises fragrance and minerality through techniques like 25% whole bunch fermentation and seasoned French oak. The 75-year-old vines, deeply rooted in McLaren Vale's signature sandy soils, produce fruit with natural concentration and complexity that doesn't need heavy extraction or new oak to shine.

The 25% whole bunch fermentation adds structural complexity and aromatic lift that perfectly complements grenache's naturally expressive character. This technique introduces subtle spice notes and silky tannins while preserving the variety's signature red fruit purity. Combined with the old vine fruit intensity, it creates that distinctive white pepper note and fine, silty texture that gives the wine its elegant backbone and age-worthy structure.

Old vines like these develop extensive root systems that tap deep into McLaren Vale's sandy subsoils, accessing minerals and water reserves that young vines simply can't reach. This results in naturally concentrated fruit with enhanced complexity and that distinctive minerality mentioned in the tasting notes. The vines also naturally self-regulate their crop levels, producing smaller yields of intensely flavoured grapes that translate directly into the wine's vibrant purity and depth.

This wine's medium body and bright acidity make it incredibly food-friendly, particularly with dishes that echo its red fruit and spice profile. Think duck breast with cherry sauce, lamb tagine with dried fruits, or aged hard cheeses where the wine's minerality can shine. The silky tannins and floral lift also make it excellent with charcuterie or Mediterranean dishes featuring herbs like rosemary and thyme.

With its 95-point rating and old vine pedigree, this grenache has excellent cellaring potential of 8-12 years. The fine tannin structure and natural acidity will allow the primary red fruit flavours to evolve into more complex secondary notes of leather, earth, and dried herbs. The seasoned French oak will integrate further, while the wine's inherent minerality will become more pronounced, creating a more savoury and contemplative drinking experience over time.
