McLaren Vale cabernet has been quietly building a reputation as one of Australia's most exciting regional expressions - and single vineyard releases like this one are exactly why. But let's lead with the number that stopped us in our tracks. 97 points from Decanter. If you know, you know - Decanter don't hand out scores like that to anyone. They're arguably the toughest room in the world to impress, and this wine just walked in and owned it.

Why do we love this wine?

The fruit comes from Peppermint Farm, planted back in 1994. Sixteen months in French oak barriques, and not a moment of that time wasted. Cedar, sandalwood, dark berry and a subtle thread of fennel and sage leaf on the nose - fragrant and composed without being showy. The palate brings ripe plum, blackcurrant and olive tapenade together with fine, linear tannins and a long savoury finish that genuinely doesn't want to leave. 95 points from Halliday's Marcus Ellis too, who called it "a beautifully judged Vale cabernet." We'd go further. This is the first release from this vineyard, and based on what's in the bottle, people are going to be talking about it for a very long time.

Frequently Asked Questions

This is the inaugural release from Peppermint Farm vineyard, planted in 1994, making it a historic debut that's already garnering serious attention. The sixteen months in French oak barriques has created exceptional complexity, with the wine earning 97 points from Decanter and Best in Show honours. McLaren Vale's warm climate typically produces powerful Cabernets, but this wine achieves remarkable elegance and composure alongside its full-bodied richness.

With its fine linear tannin structure and exceptional balance, this Cabernet has excellent ageing potential spanning 10-15 years from vintage. The French oak integration and natural acidity will allow the wine to develop tertiary flavours of leather, tobacco, and earth while maintaining its core fruit integrity. Given it's already showing beautifully now, you can enjoy it young or cellar it for peak drinking between 2028-2035.

The wine's savoury finish and olive tapenade notes make it perfect for Mediterranean-inspired dishes like herb-crusted lamb or beef with rosemary and garlic. The cedar and sandalwood oak influences complement grilled meats beautifully, while the blackcurrant intensity can stand up to rich game dishes. The subtle fennel and sage aromatics also pair wonderfully with Italian cuisine featuring these herbs.

Critics recognised the exceptional balance between power and elegance that's difficult to achieve in McLaren Vale's warm climate. Marcus Ellis from Halliday praised it as "beautifully judged," highlighting the winemaker's skill in managing extraction and oak integration. The 97 points from Decanter and Best in Show award reflect the wine's technical precision, varietal expression, and the unique terroir character of this previously unreleased vineyard site.

Single vineyard wines showcase the unique characteristics of one specific site, rather than blending fruit from multiple locations. Peppermint Farm's 30-year-old vines have developed deep root systems that access distinct soil minerals and microclimates, creating a wine with genuine sense of place. This approach allows the terroir to shine through, producing more complex and distinctive flavours than typical regional blends, which explains why this debut release has created such excitement.
