Why do we love this wine?

First produced in 1960, Bin 389's inception is closely intertwined with that of Australia's most-famous wine, Grange. The plan was to create, in Max Schubert's own words, 'a dynasty of wines which all bear an unmistakable resemblance to each other', in other words, this is Grange's little sibling. A wine of prestige and power with a potential drinking window up to 2052... drink it, age it, buy it just to look at, it's a truly special wine - enjoy it however you like.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bin 389 is famously known as 'Baby Grange' because it was designed to share DNA with Australia's most iconic wine. Created in 1960 by Max Schubert, it uses similar winemaking techniques to Grange but with a different grape composition. The wine undergoes partial barrel fermentation and extended oak maturation, creating the signature Penfolds house style that bridges the gap between premium and ultra-premium Australian reds.

This 2018 vintage has exceptional cellaring potential until 2052, giving you over 30 years of aging opportunity. The wine's structure comes from the robust tannins of Cabernet Sauvignon balanced by Shiraz's fruit intensity, creating a framework that will evolve beautifully. During cellaring, expect the blackberry and blackcurrant flavours to develop into more complex tertiary notes while the dark chocolate elements integrate further with the oak.

The 2018 vintage has earned exceptional scores (96-98 points) from multiple critics because it represents a stellar year for South Australian viticulture. The combination of ideal weather conditions and Penfolds' multi-regional sourcing strategy created wines with perfect balance between power and elegance. Critics particularly praised this vintage's seamless integration of fruit, oak, and tannins, along with its remarkable aging potential.

The rich, full-bodied profile with blackberry, blackcurrant, and dark chocolate notes makes this perfect for robust dishes that can match its intensity. Think slow-cooked lamb shanks, aged beef steaks, or game meats where the wine's tannin structure can cut through rich fats. The dark chocolate elements also complement dishes with earthy mushrooms or rich, savoury sauces, while the fruit concentration pairs beautifully with strong aged cheeses.

This wine is beautifully balanced for immediate enjoyment while also having decades of cellaring potential ahead. At five years old, the 2018 is showing its primary fruit characteristics beautifully, with the oak integration reaching an ideal harmony. If drinking now, decant for an hour to allow the full-bodied structure to open up, or cellar it for 5-10 more years to experience how the Cabernet Shiraz blend develops more complex secondary flavours.
