Why do we love this wine?

First produced in 1960, Bin 389's inception is closely intertwined with that of Australia's most-famous wine, Grange. The plan was to create, in Max Schubert's own words, 'a dynasty of wines which all bear an unmistakable resemblance to each other', in other words, this is Grange's little sibling. A wine of prestige and power with a potential drinking window up to 2055... drink it, age it, buy it just to look at, it's a truly special wine - enjoy it however you like.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bin 389 holds a unique position as Grange's 'little sibling', sharing the same winemaking philosophy and oak treatment that made Grange legendary. First crafted in 1960 under Max Schubert's vision, it represents the accessible entry point into Penfolds' premium tier whilst maintaining the house style's signature power and complexity. The wine benefits from partial maturation in the same American oak barrels previously used for Grange, creating that unmistakable family resemblance.

This 2022 vintage has exceptional cellaring potential, with a drinking window extending to 2055 - that's over 30 years of development ahead. The Cabernet Shiraz blend's robust tannin structure and the wine's full-bodied nature provide the backbone for extended ageing, during which the mulberry and raspberry fruits will evolve into more complex tertiary flavours. You can enjoy it now for its youthful vibrancy or cellar it to witness the remarkable transformation that makes Australian reds so compelling.

The impressive scores (98pts from The Vintage Journal, 97pts from Decanter) reflect the exceptional quality of the 2022 vintage and Penfolds' masterful blending expertise. Critics recognise the wine's perfect balance between power and elegance, showcasing how South Australian terroir can produce world-class Cabernet Shiraz blends. The consistent 95+ point ratings across multiple respected publications indicate this vintage represents outstanding value and quality within Penfolds' prestigious portfolio.

The wine's rich, oaky profile with mulberry and raspberry notes makes it perfect for robust dishes that can match its intensity. Think premium beef cuts like ribeye or wagyu, slow-cooked lamb shanks, or aged hard cheeses that complement the wine's complex tannin structure. The South Australian warmth and full-bodied nature also pair beautifully with barbecued meats and rich, tomato-based dishes where the wine's power won't be overwhelmed.

This blend represents Australia's signature contribution to international winemaking, combining Cabernet Sauvignon's structure and cassis notes with Shiraz's spice and richness. The style originated in South Australia where both varieties thrive, creating wines with more complexity than single varietals alone. Penfolds perfected this blend over decades, with Bin 389 showcasing how the marriage creates wines that are both approachable in youth yet capable of magnificent long-term development.
