Why do we love this wine?

First produced in 1960, Bin 389's inception is closely intertwined with that of Australia's most-famous wine, Grange. The plan was to create, in Max Schubert's own words, 'a dynasty of wines which all bear an unmistakable resemblance to each other', in other words, this is Grange's little sibling. A wine of prestige and power with a potential drinking window up to 2055... drink it, age it, buy it just to look at, it's a truly special wine - enjoy it however you like.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bin 389 is famously known as Grange's 'little sibling', sharing the same winemaking philosophy and techniques that made Penfolds legendary. First created in 1960 as part of Max Schubert's vision for a 'dynasty of wines', it undergoes partial barrel fermentation and maturation in the same American oak barrels previously used for Grange. This unique approach creates a wine with Grange-like complexity and structure, but at a more accessible price point, making it one of Australia's most respected premium blends.

The 2022 Bin 389 has exceptional cellaring potential, with a drinking window extending to 2055 - that's over 30 years of ageing capacity. This longevity comes from the wine's full-bodied structure, quality tannins, and the proven track record of Bin 389 vintages developing beautifully over decades. During cellaring, expect the vibrant mulberry and raspberry flavours to evolve into more complex secondary characters, while the oak integration becomes more seamless and elegant.

The 2022 vintage has earned outstanding scores across the board, including 98 points from The Vintage Journal and 97 points from Decanter, reflecting exceptional quality in this release. Critics consistently praise Bin 389 for its perfect balance of power and elegance, showcasing the best of both Cabernet Sauvignon's structure and Shiraz's richness. The wine's ability to express South Australian terroir while maintaining Penfolds' signature house style has made it a benchmark for Australian premium red blends.

This rich, full-bodied wine with its mulberry, raspberry, and oak characteristics pairs beautifully with robust dishes that can match its intensity. Think premium beef cuts like ribeye or wagyu, slow-cooked lamb shanks, or aged hard cheeses like vintage cheddar. The wine's structured tannins and fruit concentration also complement game meats, barbecued dishes, and rich pasta with meat-based sauces, while the oak integration adds complexity that enhances grilled or roasted preparations.

The beauty of Bin 389 lies in its versatility - it's absolutely delicious now but will reward patience with decades of development. Currently, you'll enjoy vibrant primary fruit flavours of mulberry and raspberry with well-integrated oak, showcasing the wine's youthful power and elegance. However, if you can resist, cellaring will allow the wine to develop greater complexity, with the tannins softening and secondary flavours emerging, creating an even more sophisticated drinking experience over the next 10-30 years.
