Wine of the Year 2024. Red Wine of the Year 2024. Cabernet shiraz of the Year 2024... Well, Tyson Stelzer clearly fell in love with this wine too! This is Penfolds at their most restrained and their most compelling. One of the finest wines to carry the label in years. Built for the cellar. Worth opening now just to see what's coming.

Why do we love this wine?

180 years of Penfolds. And to mark the occasion, they could have gone big and bombastic - new American oak, warm-climate muscle, the whole theatrical production. Instead they went to Coonawarra in the extraordinary 2021 vintage and made something precise, elegant and genuinely unlike anything in the modern Penfolds catalogue. That decision alone tells you everything about how seriously this wine was taken. Cabernet and shiraz in classic Australian proportion, from top-secret blocks that supply some of Penfolds' most celebrated releases. The result sits somewhere between the two varieties in the best possible way - not quite one, not quite the other, but something that feels entirely its own. Redcurrant, blackberry, blueberry and dark fruit running through a palate that's simultaneously regal and vivacious, wrapped in fine limestone-mineral tannins that only Coonawarra can produce, framed by seasoned French oak with exceptional sensitivity. An absolute pearler!

Frequently Asked Questions

Unlike the typically bold, warm-climate style Penfolds is known for, Bin 180 represents a deliberate shift towards elegance and precision. Made exclusively from Coonawarra fruit in the exceptional 2021 vintage, it showcases restraint over power, using seasoned French oak rather than new American oak. This approach creates something genuinely unique in the modern Penfolds portfolio - a wine that prioritises finesse and regional character over the house's traditional muscular style.

The 2021 vintage in Coonawarra was extraordinary, providing ideal conditions for producing wines of exceptional balance and intensity. This vintage allowed Penfolds to source fruit from their most prized secret blocks that typically supply their most celebrated releases. The combination of perfect vintage conditions and access to premium fruit sources enabled the creation of a wine that perfectly embodies both power and elegance - a rare achievement in Australian winemaking.

Coonawarra's famous terra rossa soil over limestone bedrock creates the wine's distinctive fine, mineral-driven tannin structure that's impossible to replicate elsewhere. This geological foundation provides natural acidity and elegance while allowing the cabernet blend to express both power and finesse. The limestone influence creates that signature mineral backbone that elevates the dark fruit flavours and gives the wine its regal yet vivacious character - a hallmark of premium Coonawarra cabernet.

Receiving near-perfect scores from multiple respected critics (100pts from Matthew Jukes, 99pts from three others) indicates this wine represents a pinnacle achievement in Australian winemaking. These scores reflect not just exceptional quality, but the wine's significance as a departure from convention - critics recognise both the technical excellence and the bold decision to prioritise elegance over power. Such unanimous acclaim suggests this wine will be remembered as a landmark release in Penfolds' 180-year history.

While this full-bodied wine is already showing beautifully with its complex fruit and refined tannin structure, its premium Coonawarra fruit and expert French oak treatment suggest excellent cellaring potential. The limestone-mineral tannins will continue to integrate and soften over the next decade, while the concentrated dark fruit flavours will develop additional complexity. Given its commemorative significance and critical acclaim, this wine represents both an exceptional drinking experience now and a valuable addition to any serious cellar.
