Why do we love this wine?

Luxurious on the palate. Smooth and full, it layers fruit upon fruit upon fruit. Raspberry, strawberry, black cherry, cassis, currants - the fresh-to-slightly-over-ripe fruit profile is immense. Then comes the savoury; spice and cedar mingle with tobacco and a dried leaf potpourri. This is classically French in its earthiness and the little waft of decay, but the fruit almost feels like a new world wine - so let's split the difference and say it's the best of both worlds, because it truly is.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine bridges French tradition with New World fruit intensity, creating an unusual hybrid character. While it maintains the classic earthy, savoury backbone expected from the Rhône Valley - with tobacco, cedar, and that distinctive French 'waft of decay' - the fruit profile is remarkably generous and almost overripe in style. This combination of old-world terroir expression with bold fruit concentration makes it accessible to diverse palates while retaining authentic regional character.

Serve at cellar temperature (16-18°C) to allow both the lush fruit and complex savoury elements to shine equally. The wine's medium body and layered fruit profile make it versatile for food pairing - try it with herb-crusted lamb, ratatouille, or aged cheeses where the earthy undertones can complement rustic flavours. Decanting for 30 minutes will help integrate the various fruit layers with the spice and tobacco notes.

Grenache-based blends from Côtes du Rhône typically include Syrah and Mourvèdre, creating the wine's signature fruit-forward yet structured character. Grenache contributes the raspberry and strawberry notes along with the wine's smooth texture, while Syrah likely adds the black cherry and spice elements. This blend explains the wine's ability to layer multiple fruit flavours while maintaining enough tannin structure and savoury complexity to pair well with food.

This wine is drinking beautifully now, with its fruit at peak expression and savoury elements well-integrated. The 2020 vintage from Côtes du Rhône generally produced wines with excellent balance and immediate appeal. While it could develop additional complexity over 2-3 years, the current harmony between the generous fruit and earthy undertones suggests it's at an ideal drinking window for maximum enjoyment.

Patrick Lesec is a négociant who works with carefully selected growers across the Rhône Valley to create wines that express both regional character and exceptional fruit quality. His approach focuses on finding parcels that can deliver the intensity and complexity evident in this bottling - wines that respect traditional French winemaking while appealing to modern palates. The 'Richette' cuvée represents his philosophy of creating accessible yet sophisticated wines that showcase the best of Côtes du Rhône terroir.
