Why do we love this wine?

2016 was a banger year across the Southern Rhône. There are great reds up and down the scale in terms of appellation and price. This is a great example of the excellence of 2016 in the Southern Rhone. So much fruit, so much palate weight, so much smoothness. The characteristic dried fruit is offset against refreshing acidity and juicy, round mouthfeel. That combination of density and brightness makes for a very approachable, friendly red 'all rounder.'

The Wine Advocate

The Wine Advocate

Delicious, inexpensive wines like the 2016 Cotes du Rhone Cuvee Richette show just how great the 2016 vintage is in the Southern Rhône. A blend of 75% Grenache and 25% Syrah aged in tank, this is a knockout value, bursting with vibrant black cherry and blackberry fruit, possessing ample weight and richness and finishing with silky elegance. Patrick Lesec may not bottle as many different cuvées as he used to, but the quality certainly hasn't slipped. These wines, often produced in reasonable quantities, remain notable values.

Frequently Asked Questions

2016 was an exceptional vintage across the Southern Rhône Valley, producing wines with remarkable balance and concentration. The growing conditions that year allowed for optimal ripening of Grenache and its blending partners, resulting in wines that showcase both power and elegance. This vintage is particularly noted for its ability to combine density with brightness, creating approachable wines that can be enjoyed now or cellared for further development.

Grenache blends like this Côtes du Rhône offer more complexity than single varietal expressions by combining Grenache's characteristic fruit-forward nature with complementary varieties that add structure and spice. The blending tradition in the Southern Rhône creates wines with greater depth and balance, where each grape variety contributes its strengths - Grenache provides the juicy blackberry fruit, while partners like Syrah or Mourvèdre might add colour, tannin structure, and savoury complexity.

The wine's combination of dried fruit flavours, refreshing acidity, and smooth texture makes it incredibly food-friendly. Its blackberry and allspice notes complement grilled meats, particularly lamb and beef, while the black olive characteristics pair beautifully with Mediterranean dishes featuring herbs and olives. The medium body and balanced acidity also make it excellent with aged cheeses, ratatouille, or hearty pasta dishes with tomato-based sauces.

While this Côtes du Rhône is approachable straight from the bottle due to its smooth, friendly character, a brief 30-minute decant can enhance its aromatic complexity. The wine's textured, savoury profile benefits from a little air exposure, which helps integrate the fruit and spice elements while softening any residual tannins. Given its medium body and the 2016 vintage's natural balance, it's flexible enough to enjoy either way depending on your preference.

This 2016 Côtes du Rhône is drinking beautifully now, showcasing the vintage's characteristic balance of fruit and structure. While designed as an approachable 'all rounder,' quality Côtes du Rhône from excellent vintages like 2016 can develop additional complexity over 3-5 years in proper storage. The wine's natural acidity and medium body suggest it will maintain its freshness, though the primary fruit flavours will gradually evolve into more secondary, earthy characteristics with time.
