Famous for silky, slick expressions of pinot noir, NZ's Maritnborough region might be small, but its wines punch well above their weight. This is a perfect example of what the region has to offer - concentrated, spicy and pristinely fruited. New Zealand pinot, with an eye on elegance.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Juicy, lively, absolutely moreish. Bright acidity carries waves of fresh berries and stewed rhubarb, while a kiss of toasty French oak adds just enough sophistication without overwhelming the wine's natural elegance. Fine tannins and a peppery backbone give this relatively light-bodied pinot surprising power and structure. Plump strawberries and tart raspberries working with earthy undergrowth and warm spice. There's a savoury complexity here that hints at of forest floor and wild herbs - this isn't your typical fruit-forward crowd-pleaser. This is pinot with personality.

Frequently Asked Questions

Martinborough's unique terroir combines free-draining gravelly soils with a cool, dry climate that's remarkably similar to Burgundy. This creates ideal conditions for Pinot Noir, allowing the grapes to develop complex flavours while retaining natural acidity. The region's reputation for producing elegant, food-friendly Pinot Noir is exemplified in this Palliser Estate wine, which showcases the area's ability to balance fruit intensity with earthy complexity.

The French oak treatment in this wine is deliberately restrained, adding subtle toasty notes that complement rather than dominate the fruit. French oak is prized for its tight grain and elegant tannin contribution, which enhances the wine's structure without masking Pinot Noir's delicate aromatics. This careful oak integration allows the natural berry flavours and earthy undertones to shine through while providing just enough sophistication to elevate the overall drinking experience.

Light-bodied doesn't mean simple - this wine demonstrates how skilled winemaking can create layers of complexity within an elegant framework. The savoury elements like forest floor and wild herbs come from the grape's natural tendency to express terroir, enhanced by careful fermentation techniques. Pinot Noir's thin skin allows it to capture subtle environmental influences, creating wines that can be simultaneously delicate and complex, offering both immediate fruit appeal and intriguing secondary characteristics.

This wine's bright acidity and earthy complexity make it incredibly food-friendly, particularly with dishes that echo its savoury characteristics. Think roasted duck with cherry sauce, mushroom risotto, or grilled salmon with herbs - the wine's natural acidity cuts through rich textures while its earthy notes complement umami flavours. The light body means it won't overwhelm delicate proteins, while the peppery backbone provides enough structure to stand up to more robust preparations.

Serve this Pinot Noir slightly below room temperature, around 14-16°C, to preserve its bright acidity and delicate aromatics while allowing the fruit flavours to express fully. As a 2023 vintage, it's designed for near-term enjoyment while the fresh berry characteristics are at their peak, though it can develop additional complexity over 3-5 years. Store bottles on their side in a cool, dark place, and consider decanting for 30 minutes before serving to allow the wine to open up and reveal its full aromatic potential.
