Famous for silky, slick expressions of pinot noir, NZ's Maritnborough region might be small, but its wines punch well above their weight. This is a perfect example of what the region has to offer - concentrated, spicy and pristinely fruited. New Zealand pinot, with an eye on elegance.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Juicy, lively, absolutely moreish. Bright acidity carries waves of fresh berries and stewed rhubarb, while a kiss of toasty French oak adds just enough sophistication without overwhelming the wine's natural elegance. Fine tannins and a peppery backbone give this relatively light-bodied pinot surprising power and structure. Plump strawberries and tart raspberries working with earthy undergrowth and warm spice. There's a savoury complexity here that hints at of forest floor and wild herbs - this isn't your typical fruit-forward crowd-pleaser. This is pinot with personality.

Frequently Asked Questions

Martinborough's unique terroir combines free-draining gravelly soils with a dry microclimate that's ideal for Pinot Noir. The region's proximity to Wellington's harbour creates cooling winds that help maintain the grape's natural acidity while allowing for optimal ripening. This Palliser Estate White Label showcases these regional characteristics through its bright acidity and elegant structure, demonstrating why Martinborough is considered New Zealand's premier Pinot Noir region alongside Central Otago.

The toasty French oak in this Pinot Noir provides subtle vanilla and spice notes without masking the fruit's natural character. French oak is prized for its tight grain structure, which imparts more refined tannins and delicate flavours compared to American oak. In this wine, the oak adds sophistication and complexity while allowing the bright berry fruits and earthy undertones to remain the stars, creating a harmonious balance that's characteristic of well-crafted Pinot Noir.

This wine's bright acidity and savoury complexity make it incredibly food-friendly, particularly with dishes that echo its earthy, herbaceous notes. Try it with roasted duck breast, wild mushroom risotto, or herb-crusted lamb where the wine's forest floor characteristics will complement the earthy flavours. The wine's fresh berry profile also pairs beautifully with salmon, charcuterie, or aged cheeses, while its fine tannins won't overpower lighter dishes like roasted chicken or pork tenderloin.

A 90-point score from Wine Orbit represents exceptional quality, placing this wine in the 'outstanding' category where only the finest examples achieve recognition. This rating reflects the wine's complexity, balance, and regional typicity - particularly impressive for a 'White Label' tier wine which typically represents excellent value. The five-star rating indicates this Pinot Noir successfully balances accessibility with sophistication, offering both immediate drinking pleasure and the structural integrity that suggests good aging potential.

While delicious now, this structured Pinot Noir has the fine tannins and bright acidity needed for 5-8 years of cellaring. Over time, the primary berry fruits will evolve into more complex secondary flavours of leather, game, and dried herbs, while the earthy forest floor notes will become more pronounced. The wine's savoury backbone and peppery spice will integrate further, creating a more seamless, sophisticated drinking experience that showcases Pinot Noir's remarkable ability to develop complexity with age.
