Jacaranda Ridge is a name that cabernet lovers know well, and for good reason. This single vineyard site in the northern stretch of Coonawarra consistently produces wines of depth, structure and serious longevity. It's no exaggeration to say that this is consistently up there with some of the best cabernet sauvignons.

Why do we love this wine?

The terra rossa soils, cool climate and meticulous winemaking all come together here to give cabernet its truest voice. The nose is textbook Coonawarra: cassis and blackberry leaf leading the charge, followed by darker berry fruits, savoury leather, spice and a touch of French oak. On the palate it’s all about precision and drive - concentrated black fruit wrapped in a tight tannin frame, with bright acidity giving lift and clarity. Toasted cedar and subtle oak notes play in the background, adding polish without stealing the show. This is cabernet with backbone - a wine built to age gracefully, but already showing the elegance and intensity that makes Coonawarra one of the world’s greatest cab regions. Drink it now with a good decant alongside roast lamb or venison, or tuck it away for 10-15 years and watch it evolve into something truly special.

Frequently Asked Questions

Coonawarra's unique terra rossa soils - a thin strip of iron-rich red earth over limestone - create ideal drainage and mineral complexity that Cabernet Sauvignon thrives in. The cool climate allows for extended ripening periods, developing intense fruit concentration while maintaining the bright acidity that gives these wines their legendary structure and ageing potential. This combination produces Cabernets with distinctive cassis and eucalyptus characters that are recognised globally as benchmark expressions of the variety.

While this wine is already drinking beautifully with proper decanting, its tight tannin structure and concentrated fruit suggest it will develop magnificently over the next 10-15 years. The French oak integration will become more seamless, the leather and spice notes will intensify, and the fruit will evolve from primary blackberry to more complex secondary characters. Peak drinking will likely be between 2028-2035, though well-stored bottles could continue evolving for two decades.

The wine's robust tannin structure and concentrated dark fruit make it perfect for rich, protein-heavy dishes that can match its intensity. Classic pairings include roast lamb with rosemary, aged beef steaks, or game meats like venison where the wine's savoury leather notes complement the meat's earthiness. The cedar and spice elements also work beautifully with dishes featuring herbs like thyme or bay leaves, while the wine's acidity cuts through rich sauces and marinades.

The exceptional scores (96pts Wine Pilot, 95pts Real Review) reflect this wine's textbook expression of premium Coonawarra Cabernet - it demonstrates perfect balance between power and elegance. Critics appreciate how the winemaking allows the terroir to shine through, with the French oak enhancing rather than masking the fruit, and the precise tannin management creating structure without harshness. The wine showcases both immediate appeal and clear ageing potential, which critics value highly in premium Cabernet.

Absolutely - decanting is highly recommended for this full-bodied 2018 Cabernet, especially if drinking it young. The tight tannin frame needs oxygen exposure to soften and integrate, while decanting allows the concentrated black fruit aromatics to fully express themselves. Plan for at least 1-2 hours of decanting to unlock the wine's complexity, though it can handle even longer exposure. This process will reveal the subtle interplay between the dark fruit, cedar, and spice elements that make this wine so compelling.
