What happens when one of the world's most recognisable Champagne houses turn their hand to Central Otago pinot? Good things, obviously! We'll be honest, we didn't see this coming, but now that we're on the second vintage - we're completely stoked that it's here.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

The first still wine from an utterly iconic, but apparently shy, Champagne house. This crew have access to some of the best pinot noir grapes in the entire world - Champagne does border Burgundy after all - it speaks volumes to the quality of the fruit that this famous producer decided to come half way around the world just to get their hands on the good stuff, Central Otago pinot. The wine is highly regional and varietal with a complex mouthfeel and flavours of black cherry, plum, graphite and forest floor. A subtle hint of French oak and silky tannins prolong the finish and send you back for another sip before you've even finished your first. This one's an absolute cracker.

Frequently Asked Questions

While Mumm has access to exceptional pinot noir in Champagne (which borders Burgundy), they ventured to Central Otago because this region produces pinot noir with a distinctly different character. Central Otago's continental climate and schist soils create wines with more pronounced fruit intensity and textural complexity than the cooler, chalk-driven terroir of Champagne. This allows Mumm to showcase their winemaking expertise on fruit that expresses pure varietal character without the constraints of traditional Champagne production methods.

The complex mouthfeel comes from Central Otago's unique terroir combined with Mumm's refined winemaking approach. The region's dramatic temperature variations between day and night preserve acidity while developing rich fruit flavours, creating natural textural tension. The subtle French oak integration adds structure without overwhelming the wine's inherent silkiness, while the schist soils of Central Otago contribute to the wine's mineral backbone and graphite notes that enhance the overall textural complexity.

These earthy, savoury characteristics are hallmarks of quality pinot noir and develop through both terroir and winemaking decisions. The forest floor notes emerge from Central Otago's wild, mountainous environment and are enhanced by allowing some whole bunch fermentation or extended skin contact. Graphite minerality comes directly from the region's schist soils, which impart a distinctive pencil-lead character that's particularly pronounced in cooler vintages like 2022, adding sophistication and age-worthiness to the wine.

This 2022 vintage is beautifully approachable now, showcasing vibrant cherry and plum fruits with well-integrated tannins that won't overpower food pairings. However, Central Otago pinot noir from quality producers like Mumm typically develops additional complexity over 5-8 years, with the forest floor and earthy characteristics becoming more pronounced. The wine's medium body and balanced structure suggest it will reward both immediate enjoyment and patient cellaring, depending on your preference for primary fruit versus developed tertiary flavours.

The wine's textured, savoury profile makes it incredibly food-friendly, particularly with dishes that echo its earthy complexity. Think roasted duck with cherry sauce, mushroom risotto, or aged hard cheeses that complement the forest floor notes. The graphite minerality pairs beautifully with grilled lamb or venison, while the silky tannins won't compete with delicate preparations like salmon or tuna. The wine's medium body also makes it excellent with charcuterie boards featuring earthy elements like pâtés and aged salamis.
