What happens when one of the world's most recognisable Champagne houses turn their hand to Central Otago pinot? Good things, Mofo, obviously! We'll be honest, we didn't see this coming, but we're completely stoked that it's here now.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

The first still wine from an utterly iconic, but apparently shy, Champagne house. This crew have access to some of the best pinot noir grapes in the entire world - Champagne is a part of Burgundy after all - it speaks volumes to the quality of the fruit that this famous producer decided to come half way around the world just to get their hands on the good stuff, Central Otago pinot. The wine is highly regional and varietal with a complex mouthfeel and flavours of black cherry, plum, graphite and forest floor. A subtle hint of French oak and silky tannins prolong the finish and send you back for another sip before you've even finished your first. This one's an absolute cracker.

Frequently Asked Questions

This represents a fascinating shift for the legendary Champagne house - they recognised that Central Otago produces some of the world's finest pinot noir grapes, rivalling even their home region. The cool climate and unique terroir of Central Otago creates the perfect conditions for elegant pinot noir, offering Mumm an opportunity to showcase their winemaking expertise with exceptional fruit quality that meets their exacting standards.

While Mumm's Champagne showcases pinot noir's bright, crisp characteristics through traditional méthode champenoise, this still wine reveals the grape's deeper, more contemplative side. The Central Otago terroir allows the pinot noir to express complex earthy notes like graphite and forest floor, while maintaining the elegance and finesse that Mumm is renowned for, just in a completely different format.

Central Otago's unique combination of continental climate, schist soils, and dramatic diurnal temperature variation creates ideal conditions for pinot noir. The cool nights preserve acidity and delicate aromatics, while warm days develop flavour complexity and colour intensity. This terroir produces wines with exceptional purity and site expression, which is why prestigious producers like Mumm seek out these grapes.

With its 96-point rating and silky tannin structure, this wine is beautifully balanced for immediate enjoyment while having excellent cellaring potential. The French oak integration and complex flavour profile suggest it will continue developing over 5-8 years, with the forest floor and graphite notes likely to become more pronounced. The 2021 vintage's natural acidity will help preserve freshness during aging.

The wine's light body and elegant tannins make it incredibly food-friendly, particularly with duck, salmon, or mushroom-based dishes that complement the earthy forest floor notes. The black cherry and plum flavours pair beautifully with game birds or aged cheeses, while the subtle French oak won't overpower delicate preparations. Its Central Otago character also makes it excellent with local lamb or venison.
