What happens when one of the world's most recognisable Champagne houses turn their hand to Central Otago pinot? Good things, Mofo, obviously! We'll be honest, we didn't see this coming, but we're completely stoked that it's here now.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

The first still wine from an utterly iconic, but apparently shy, Champagne house. This crew have access to some of the best pinot noir grapes in the entire world - Champagne is a part of Burgundy after all - it speaks volumes to the quality of the fruit that this famous producer decided to come half way around the world just to get their hands on the good stuff, Central Otago pinot. The wine is highly regional and varietal with a complex mouthfeel and flavours of black cherry, plum, graphite and forest floor. A subtle hint of French oak and silky tannins prolong the finish and send you back for another sip before you've even finished your first. This one's an absolute cracker.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mumm's venture into Central Otago represents their pursuit of exceptional pinot noir fruit that meets their exacting standards. While Champagne producers have access to excellent pinot noir in their home region, Central Otago's unique terroir - with its continental climate, schist soils, and dramatic diurnal temperature variation - produces pinot noir with distinctive characteristics that attracted this prestigious house. This marks Mumm's first still wine production, demonstrating their commitment to exploring premium pinot noir expressions beyond their traditional sparkling wines.

Central Otago is the world's southernmost wine region and New Zealand's only continental climate zone, creating ideal conditions for pinot noir. The region's schist soils, extreme diurnal temperature shifts, and high altitude vineyards produce wines with intense colour, complex aromatics, and excellent structure. The harsh winters and warm, dry summers concentrate flavours while maintaining crucial acidity, resulting in pinot noir that balances power with elegance - qualities that clearly impressed Mumm enough to establish production there.

This Mumm expression showcases a more restrained, European-influenced approach compared to many bold Central Otago pinots. The subtle French oak integration and focus on elegance over power reflects Mumm's Champagne house philosophy of finesse and balance. While maintaining the region's characteristic black cherry and plum flavours, the wine emphasises complexity through earthy notes like graphite and forest floor, creating a more nuanced profile that bridges Old World sophistication with New World fruit intensity.

A 96-point rating from Wine Pilot indicates this is an exceptional wine that represents outstanding quality and typicity for its region and variety. Scores in the 95-100 range are reserved for wines showing remarkable complexity, perfect balance, and distinctive character that sets them apart from their peers. This rating suggests the wine successfully captures both Central Otago's terroir expression and Mumm's winemaking expertise, making it a standout example of premium New Zealand pinot noir that competes with the world's finest expressions.

Serve this wine slightly below room temperature (14-16°C) to highlight its elegant structure and complex aromatics. The light-bodied style and silky tannins make it incredibly food-friendly, pairing beautifully with duck, salmon, mushroom dishes, or aged cheeses. The wine's earthy undertones and subtle oak complement game birds and roasted vegetables, while its bright acidity cuts through richer preparations. Consider decanting for 30 minutes to allow the forest floor and graphite notes to fully develop.
