Ben Riggs is McLaren Vale royalty. This is the wine of a maker in his prime. Known by all, and perhaps the envy of a few. This wine is superfine, mega satisfying and drinking like a dream.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Made in super-small batches, this has the classic fruitcake richness you’d expect, with surprising elegance, tasteful French oak and a savoury spice finish. It’s long and supple, rich enough for some lip-smacking satisfaction, but not overweight or tiresome. A bright streak of acidity keeps things fresh and exciting. No wonder so many mofos come back for more (and more, and more).

Frequently Asked Questions

McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate and diverse soils create perfect conditions for Shiraz to develop the rich fruitcake characteristics found in this wine. The region's warm days and cool sea breezes from the nearby coast help maintain the bright acidity that keeps this full-bodied wine fresh and exciting. This terroir allows Mr Riggs to craft wines with both power and elegance, avoiding the overweight character that can plague lesser examples.

The tasteful French oak integration adds cedar notes and structural complexity without overwhelming the wine's natural plum and spice character. French oak tends to be more subtle than American oak, contributing tannin structure and allowing the Shiraz's inherent savoury spice finish to shine through. This careful oak handling is crucial in small-batch winemaking, where every barrel's influence is magnified and must be perfectly balanced.

The 2022 vintage in McLaren Vale benefited from ideal growing conditions that allowed Shiraz grapes to achieve optimal ripeness while retaining natural acidity. This balance is evident in the wine's ability to be rich and full-bodied yet maintain elegance and freshness. Exceptional vintages like 2022 produce wines with greater aging potential and more complex flavour development, explaining the high ratings from both Halliday and Vivino.

The wine's rich fruitcake character and savoury spice finish make it perfect for hearty dishes like slow-cooked lamb, beef stews, or aged hard cheeses. The cedar notes from French oak complement grilled meats beautifully, while the bright acidity cuts through rich, fatty foods. The wine's supple texture and balanced weight mean it won't overpower dishes, making it versatile enough for both casual barbecues and elegant dinner parties.

Store this Shiraz in a cool, dark place at around 12-15°C to preserve its vibrant fruit character and elegant structure. Serve slightly below room temperature (16-18°C) to highlight the wine's fresh acidity and prevent the alcohol from becoming too prominent. The wine's balanced structure suggests it will develop additional complexity over the next 5-8 years, though its current elegance and bright acidity make it thoroughly enjoyable now.
