When Mr Riggs takes on Italy's most-famous grape, we sit up and pay attention. Slurpable, soft and juicy, YET structured, tannic and dry. Put a glass of this in one hand and literally any dish containing tomatoes in the other and you are in heaven. Trust us on this one.

Why do we love this wine?

The crew at Mr. Riggs aren't new to sangiovese, they've got this whole thing down to a fine art. They source the grapes from a single vineyard in the Adelaide Hills and make a fruit-driven silky smooth wine to pair with a wide range of dishes. This medium-bodied wine sings of dark cherries and redcurrants, finishing with enough acid to work perfectly with pork, lamb and beef. Roasted veggies are a go as well if meat’s not your thing. So whether you’re having a sanga, a snag, a parma or a spag bol, this’ll work its magic perfectly.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Adelaide Hills' cool climate and elevated vineyards create perfect conditions for Sangiovese, allowing the variety to retain its characteristic bright acidity while developing complex cherry and spice flavours. The region's diurnal temperature variation helps preserve the grape's natural elegance, resulting in wines that showcase Sangiovese's Italian heritage while expressing distinctive Australian terroir. This single vineyard expression demonstrates how the Hills can produce Sangiovese with both power and finesse.

While maintaining Sangiovese's signature cherry character and food-friendly acidity, this Adelaide Hills expression offers a more fruit-forward, approachable style compared to its Tuscan cousins. Australian Sangiovese tends to be softer and more immediately enjoyable, with less tannin structure than Chianti Classico, making it perfect for casual dining. The spicebox notes reflect the variety's inherent character, while the silky texture showcases the modern Australian winemaking approach.

Sangiovese's natural high acidity and medium body make it an exceptional partner for protein-rich foods, as the acid cuts through fat while the wine's cherry flavours complement the umami in grilled and roasted meats. The earthy undertones and spice elements create flavour bridges with herbs and seasonings commonly used in meat preparation. This wine's balanced structure means it won't overpower lighter meats like pork while still holding up to robust beef dishes.

This prestigious rating from James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion indicates that Mr Riggs consistently produces wines of outstanding quality across their range. The five red star rating is reserved for wineries that demonstrate exceptional winemaking standards, vineyard management, and consistent excellence over multiple vintages. It's one of the highest accolades in Australian wine, signifying that this producer is among the country's elite, making their wines reliable choices for both everyday drinking and special occasions.

Serve this Sangiovese slightly below room temperature at 16-18°C to highlight its fresh cherry character and maintain its silky texture. As a 2023 vintage, it's designed for immediate enjoyment while the fruit is at its peak, though it can develop additional complexity over 2-3 years with proper storage. Keep bottles in a cool, dark place away from temperature fluctuations, and consider decanting for 30 minutes before serving to allow the earthy and spice notes to fully express themselves.
