There's an unofficial saying in South Australia, 'if you want a wine made, make a wine - if you want a wine made well, get Ben Riggs to make it'. Honestly, this bloke doesn't miss. Soft and silky in all the right places, but with that oomph and subtle structure that delicious pinots tend to have. We love this wine, you will too. Drink with anything you can think of, even curry - we dare you!

Why do we love this wine?

This one’s a breath of fresh air. A bright, floral and beautifully aromatic pinot that nails the balance between elegance and flavour. Think cherries, raspberries and a touch of savoury spice gliding across a soft, silky palate. A cooler vintage meant slower ripening and brilliant natural acidity, with fruit hand-picked in the early hours keep things pristine. What we end up with is a graceful, juicy red that’s as easy to love on a Tuesday night as it is at a wedding, birthday or parent-teacher interview.

Frequently Asked Questions

Adelaide Hills' cool climate and elevated vineyards create perfect conditions for Pinot Noir, allowing for the slow ripening that preserves the grape's delicate aromatics and natural acidity. The region's temperature variations between day and night help maintain the bright fruit flavours and elegant structure that Pinot Noir is famous for. This cooler vintage particularly benefited from these conditions, resulting in exceptional balance and pristine fruit character.

The 2024 vintage was notably cooler than average, which proved to be a blessing for Pinot Noir production. Cooler conditions meant grapes ripened more slowly, allowing flavour compounds to develop complexity while retaining brilliant natural acidity. This extended ripening period, combined with early morning hand-picking, preserved the wine's fresh, floral aromatics and created the graceful balance between fruit intensity and elegance that defines this particular bottling.

This elegant, cherry and raspberry-driven Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with dishes that won't overpower its delicate structure. Think roasted chicken with herbs, salmon with light sauces, or mushroom risotto where the wine's savoury spice notes can complement earthy flavours. The wine's bright acidity and soft tannins also make it excellent with charcuterie, soft cheeses, or even slightly spiced Asian cuisine where its fruit-forward character can balance gentle heat.

Early morning harvesting is crucial for maintaining fruit integrity, especially for delicate varieties like Pinot Noir. Cool morning temperatures prevent premature fermentation and preserve the grape's natural aromatics and acidity that would otherwise be lost in the heat of the day. This careful timing, combined with gentle hand-selection, ensures only the best fruit makes it into the wine, contributing to the pristine, floral character and bright flavours that define this particular bottling.

Single vineyard wines like this Idle Lane Pinot Noir showcase the unique characteristics of one specific site, rather than blending fruit from multiple locations. This allows the wine to express the distinct terroir - the combination of soil, climate, and topography - of that particular vineyard block. The result is often more focused flavours and a stronger sense of place, which explains why this wine has such a clear, elegant personality that reflects its Adelaide Hills origins.
