Why do we love this wine?

We wonder why this wondrous variety doesn’t get more time in the spotlight. Yes, it’s well known as the ‘M’ in the ever popular GSM blend, but as a straight variety mourvedre holds its own. Any avid wine loving aficionado should be able to attest. Without giving too much away, be assured that the vineyard from whence these grapes were plucked are hot property, and showcase all we’ve come to love and adore from mourvedre. Red berry notes burst from the glass surrounded by enticing perfumed aromatics. A savoury core of fresh and dried herbs, bay leaf and subtle cacao are testament to its complexity and the long finish of soft spice will leave you wanting yet another sip. Its medium body maintains freshness, allowing a drinking window from now onwards.

What is a Black Market deal?

Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article – absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mourvedre has traditionally played second fiddle in famous GSM blends, where it adds structure and spice to Grenache and Shiraz. However, as a solo act, it reveals remarkable complexity with its unique combination of red berry fruit, savoury herbs, and distinctive perfumed aromatics. This Barossa expression demonstrates why serious wine collectors are increasingly seeking out single-variety Mourvedre for its ability to showcase terroir and age gracefully.

The warm, dry climate of the Barossa Valley mirrors the Mediterranean conditions where Mourvedre (locally called Mataro) originated in Spain's Monastrell region. The valley's ancient soils and hot summers concentrate flavours while retaining crucial acidity, creating the perfect balance of power and elegance. This terroir allows the variety to develop its signature savoury complexity while maintaining the fresh herb and spice notes that make Barossa Mataro so distinctive.

Serve this wine at cellar temperature (16-18°C) to allow its complex aromatics to fully express themselves. The full-bodied nature and savoury herb profile make it an excellent match for grilled meats, Mediterranean cuisine, or aged cheeses. Consider decanting for 30 minutes to soften the tannins and enhance the perfumed qualities, particularly if drinking now rather than cellaring.

A 94-point rating from Wine Orbit places this Mourvedre in exceptional company, indicating outstanding quality and complexity. This score suggests the wine demonstrates perfect varietal expression, excellent balance, and significant ageing potential. The additional five-star rating reinforces that this represents exceptional value, particularly important for a Black Market deal where the producer's reputation remains hidden until delivery.

Mourvedre is renowned for its excellent ageing potential, often improving for 8-15 years from vintage. The 2020's full-bodied structure, natural acidity, and complex tannin profile suggest it will develop beautifully over the next decade, with the fresh red berry notes evolving into deeper, more savoury characteristics. The wine's current drinking window allows immediate enjoyment, but patient cellaring will reward you with increased complexity and integration of the spice and herb elements.
