Luscious and lively. This is why we love Australian Montepulciano. A wine built around deep, rich cherries and cranberries with a spicy aromatic finish and a delightful acid structure. Turns out planting Monte in the Eden was an absolute masterstroke.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Monte is one of those varieties that feels as if it was created with the harsh Australian climate in mind. These grapes love the sun, and believe it or not, the Eden Valley gets plenty of sun. This wine has a paradoxical capacity to bring ripe, rich fruit flavours without losing its natural acid or becoming overly sweet. We don't often think of red wine as refreshing but that's exactly what this bouncy little number is. This one is all about the balance between overt red and black fruit, a vibrant acid structure and warming spice, in a lot of ways it's a very Australian wine but there's more than a wink a nod to all the old-school Italian wines that came before.

Frequently Asked Questions

Montepulciano is a sun-loving variety that thrives in hot climates, making it perfectly suited to Australia's harsh conditions. Unlike many red varieties that can become jammy or lose their structure in intense heat, Montepulciano maintains its natural acidity and avoids excessive sweetness even when fully ripe. This resilience allows it to produce wines with rich fruit character while retaining the freshness and balance that makes them food-friendly and versatile.

This wine represents a fascinating fusion of Australian and Italian winemaking philosophies. While it delivers the ripe, generous fruit flavours typical of Australian reds, it maintains the textural complexity and savoury elements found in traditional Italian Montepulciano d'Abruzzo. The Eden Valley's cool nights help preserve the variety's natural acidity, creating a wine that honours its Italian heritage while expressing its Australian terroir through more pronounced fruit intensity.

The wine's balanced acidity and spice notes make it incredibly food-friendly, particularly with Mediterranean cuisine that bridges its Italian origins and Australian character. Think grilled lamb with rosemary, pizza with cured meats, or pasta with rich tomato-based sauces. The cherry and raspberry flavours also complement game birds, while the savoury, textured profile pairs beautifully with aged cheeses and charcuterie boards.

The 2021 vintage in Eden Valley benefited from ideal growing conditions that allowed Montepulciano to reach full phenolic ripeness while maintaining its signature freshness. Cool nights during the ripening period helped preserve the variety's natural acidity, while abundant sunshine during the day developed the rich fruit flavours. This combination created wines with exceptional balance - ripe enough to show the variety's generous character, yet structured enough to age gracefully.

A refreshing red wine maintains bright acidity and avoids the heavy, cloying sensation that some ripe reds can have. This Montepulciano achieves this through its natural acid retention and the Eden Valley's climate, which allows the grapes to ripen fully without losing their structural backbone. The result is a wine that feels lively and energetic on the palate rather than dense or overwhelming, making it perfect for warmer weather drinking or as an aperitif-style red.
