Fun fact: 'Mollydooker' is old-timey Australian slang for 'South-paw', or a left-handed boxer, and let's just say this - it definitely packs a punch (excuse the pun). Ripe dark fruit, American oak, silky tannins and a long, long finish. It's powerful, perky, and, in our eyes: perfect.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

The 2023 Boxer is bold and expressive, built on a core of dark fruit, black cherries, dark chocolate, and a flicker of clove spice. Velvety in texture, it glides across the palate with juicy plum, balanced tannins, and a good lick of toasty oak. Rich, layered, and impressively structured, this is a wine that doesn’t hold back. Like any good boxer, this one comes at you with combinations, the nose softens you up, like a a couple of good jabs, and the knock out blow? An opulent, powerful palate that just goes BANG! If your ears aren't ringing from that, the lingering natural acid and ripe tannin will have you on the canvas, yet ready for more. Wonderful stuff.

Frequently Asked Questions

These two South Australian regions create the perfect marriage for The Boxer's bold character. McLaren Vale's warm Mediterranean climate and ancient soils produce the intense dark fruit and chocolate notes, while Langhorne Creek's cooler breezes and alluvial soils contribute the wine's structural backbone and balanced tannins. This regional blending technique allows Mollydooker to craft a Shiraz that's both powerful and elegant, showcasing the best of both terroirs.

The 2023 vintage represents what critics call a 'Killer Vintage' for Australian Shiraz, with ideal growing conditions producing exceptional concentration and balance. This particular year shows enhanced dark fruit intensity and improved structural complexity compared to previous releases. The vintage's natural acidity is particularly noteworthy, providing the wine with excellent ageing potential while maintaining the signature Mollydooker richness that has earned consistent 4.1 Vivino ratings across all vintages.

The Boxer's bold tannin structure and dark chocolate notes make it exceptional with grilled red meats, particularly char-grilled steaks or lamb with rosemary. The wine's clove spice and mocha characteristics also complement rich game dishes, aged cheeses, and even dark chocolate desserts. Its velvety texture and balanced acidity cut through fatty foods beautifully, while the toasty oak integration enhances barbecued or smoked preparations.

Decanting for 30-60 minutes will help this full-bodied Shiraz open up and showcase its layered complexity, particularly the interplay between dark fruit and oak. While delicious now, the 2023's impressive structure and natural acidity suggest excellent cellaring potential of 8-12 years. The wine's ripe tannins will continue to integrate and soften, while the core fruit flavours will develop greater depth and tertiary characteristics over time.

Mollydooker is recognised for their bold, expressive style that doesn't shy away from power and richness, as perfectly demonstrated in The Boxer's 'knockout blow' philosophy. Their approach focuses on maximising fruit expression while maintaining structural integrity through careful oak integration and tannin management. This iconic producer has built their reputation on creating wines that are immediately appealing yet possess the complexity and balance for serious wine enthusiasts, earning consistent high ratings and critical acclaim.
