Why do we love this wine?

All the upfront dark fruit and chocolatey goodness you'd expect from the region, think blackberries and blueberries with a beautifully perfumed nose of violets and chocolate. A concentrated, pure fruited wine that's been matured for 25 months in French and American oak then let age in the bottle for 7 years. 95pts from Halliday. Pretty much what McLaren Vale shiraz is all about.

Halliday Wine Companion

Halliday Wine Companion

A 'best barrels' selection. 25 months in (mostly American, some French, 20% new) oak. For all its might it remains mannered. Blueberry, blackberry, violet and saltbush flavours are given a gentle tickle by nutty, smoky oak. Tannin is an exercise in intricacy and there's a decent push of flavour through the finish. It's a voluptuous wine, the quality is up there.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2015 vintage was rated as a 'Killer Vintage' and this particular wine showcases why McLaren Vale had such exceptional conditions that year. After 25 months of careful oak maturation using both French and American barrels, the wine was then bottle-aged for 7 years, allowing the tannins to soften and the complex flavours to integrate beautifully. This extended ageing process has created a wine that's now drinking at its peak, with the bold fruit characteristics perfectly balanced by mature, developed secondary flavours.

The combination of French and American oak over 25 months creates a sophisticated flavour profile that enhances rather than overwhelms the fruit. French oak typically contributes subtle spice and tannin structure, while American oak adds those lovely vanilla and chocolate notes that complement the wine's natural dark berry flavours. This dual-oak approach is particularly effective with McLaren Vale Shiraz, as it supports the region's naturally intense fruit while adding complexity and textural depth.

This concentrated, full-bodied wine demands equally robust flavours to match its intensity. Think slow-cooked lamb shanks, grilled ribeye steak, or rich game meats like venison, where the wine's blackberry and plum notes will complement the meat's savoury richness. The cedar and chocolate undertones also make it excellent with aged hard cheeses or dark chocolate desserts. The wine's structure and tannins can cut through rich, fatty dishes while its fruit concentration won't be overwhelmed by bold seasonings.

James Halliday's 95-point rating reflects this wine's exceptional expression of McLaren Vale terroir and masterful winemaking technique. The score recognises the wine's perfect balance between concentrated dark fruit, elegant floral aromatics, and well-integrated oak influence. Halliday particularly values wines that authentically represent their region's character, and this Shiraz delivers exactly what McLaren Vale is renowned for - powerful yet refined wines with distinctive chocolate and violet notes that set them apart from other Australian Shiraz regions.

Having already been aged for 7 years in bottle since its 2015 vintage, this wine is drinking beautifully now but still has excellent cellaring potential. McLaren Vale Shiraz of this quality typically peaks between 8-15 years from vintage, meaning you have several more years to enjoy its evolution. The wine's full-bodied structure, balanced acidity, and quality oak treatment provide the backbone for continued development, though the intense fruit flavours are currently at their most expressive and integrated state.
