This is some serious Barossa shiraz. According to Vivino, this one sits in the top 9% of wines in the entire world - we reckon that's slightly unders here, to be honest. The folks at Maverick never let us down, but this particular wine, from this particular vintage... This has taken us from Maverick fanatics to full blown Maverick disciples.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

The look of the bottle alone is enough to impress your guests - but the contents, that's what's gonna get chins wagging. From the get go it's classic Barossa, viscous, deep, dark and with a structure concentration that tells us this wine is going to outlast religion! Get this in the decanter, get some fatty meat on the fire and watch this thing develop into what could be the wine of a lifetime. For those that care - this is built from 100% fully biodynamic fruit. Looking after the land, especially to the extent that this lot do, ensures a few things though - it means we've got a true expression of the famed terroir, it means the wines are going to age like George Clooney but it also means that this wine will not be the last fantastic vintage we get to see here. Consistency of quality is one of the most important parts of they do at Maverick Wines. And with a back catalogue as good as theirs - play on. We are firmly in the palm of their hand.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2021 Trial Hill Shiraz possesses exceptional structural concentration and depth that indicates significant ageing potential. Barossa Valley Shiraz is renowned for developing complex tertiary flavours over decades, with the tannin structure and fruit intensity in this wine providing the backbone for extended cellaring. The biodynamic farming practices also contribute to wines with greater longevity, as the enhanced soil health and vine balance typically produce grapes with more complete phenolic development.

Biodynamic viticulture enhances terroir expression by treating the vineyard as a complete ecosystem, resulting in more authentic regional character. This approach typically produces grapes with greater flavour complexity and mineral expression, as the vines develop deeper root systems and better soil integration. The blood plum, cedar, and tobacco notes in this Shiraz reflect the pure expression of Barossa terroir that biodynamic practices help achieve, creating wines with distinctive personality rather than generic varietal character.

The wine's rich, viscous texture and robust tannin structure make it ideal for fatty, protein-rich dishes that can match its intensity. Classic pairings include grilled lamb with rosemary, slow-cooked beef brisket, or aged hard cheeses like vintage cheddar. The cedar and tobacco notes particularly complement barbecued meats with smoky flavours, while the blood plum character provides enough fruit sweetness to balance spicy cuisines like Middle Eastern or Indian dishes.

Decanting serves multiple purposes for this concentrated young Shiraz, primarily allowing the wine to breathe and soften its powerful tannins. The process helps integrate the wine's components and allows the complex aromatics to fully develop and express themselves. Given the wine's youth and intensity, decanting for 1-2 hours will reveal layers of flavour that might otherwise remain closed, transforming the drinking experience from good to exceptional.

A 96-point rating from Wine Orbit places this Shiraz in the 'outstanding' category, indicating exceptional quality that surpasses most wines in its class. This score suggests the wine demonstrates perfect balance, complexity, and regional typicity that critics seek in premium Australian Shiraz. Such high ratings typically reflect wines with both immediate appeal and long-term potential, confirming this bottle represents excellent value for collectors and serious wine enthusiasts seeking benchmark Barossa expressions.
