Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Every vintage, Barossa powerhouse, Maverick, grades their absolute best fruit and secret it away to create this, their flagship wine. The 2020 edition, an almost even blend of Shiraz and Cabernet, has been produced in a style the winemaker describes as ‘a steel hand in a velvet glove’. It’s silky-smooth, but with an otherworldly force behind it. Simply put, for lovers of big, bold Barossa reds, this has it all. The nose exhibits violets, olive tapenade and dark sweet fruits. There’s plum, blackcurrant, cedar and spice on the substantial palate, leading to a finish that just goes on and on. You couldn’t pack much more flavour and concentration into a wine than we have here. Liquid gold.

Halliday Wine Companion

Halliday Wine Companion

" A wine that shines a light on the best fruit from the Barossa and Eden valleys. Elegant and fruit-pure with an ironstone and iodine-like sheen to the deep blackberry and black cherry fruits. Layers of baking spices, roasting meats, blood pudding, dark chocolate and impressively judged oak along with compact granitic tannins and bright acidity with excellent length on the finish. Another very impressive release. 96 Points." - Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion

Frequently Asked Questions

The Maverick represents the pinnacle of selective winemaking, where only the absolute best fruit from each vintage is chosen for this flagship wine. The winemaker's philosophy of 'a steel hand in a velvet glove' creates a unique paradox - delivering the power and intensity Barossa is famous for, whilst maintaining an unexpectedly silky texture. This approach to blending Shiraz and Cabernet in near-equal proportions allows the spicy, peppery characteristics of Shiraz to complement the structured tannins of Cabernet Sauvignon.

Given its full-bodied nature and complex flavour profile, this wine benefits from decanting for at least an hour before serving to allow the concentrated flavours to open up properly. Serve at 16-18°C to showcase the violet and dark fruit aromatics on the nose. The substantial palate and long finish make it perfect for pairing with rich, protein-heavy dishes like slow-cooked lamb, aged beef, or strong cheeses that can match its intensity without being overwhelmed.

The 96-point rating from Dave Brookes at Halliday Wine Companion places this wine in the 'outstanding' category, indicating exceptional quality that represents the top tier of Australian wine production. This score suggests the wine demonstrates perfect balance, complexity, and ageing potential. The 4.5 Vivino rating from consumer reviews confirms that the wine's appeal extends beyond critics to everyday wine drinkers, indicating it successfully bridges the gap between technical excellence and drinking pleasure.

The concentrated nature and 'otherworldly force' described in this wine, combined with its structured Cabernet Sauvignon component, suggests excellent cellaring potential of 10-15 years from vintage. The cedar notes already present indicate some oak integration, whilst the plum and blackcurrant flavours will evolve into more complex tertiary characters over time. The wine's current power and tannin structure provide the backbone necessary for graceful ageing, though it's certainly approachable now for those who prefer bold, fruit-forward expressions.

The term 'boutique producer' refers to Maverick's selective, quality-focused approach rather than their reputation or influence in the region. They grade and secret away only their absolute best fruit each vintage, producing limited quantities of premium wine rather than mass-market volumes. This artisanal methodology, combined with their single vineyard sourcing, allows them to maintain exceptional quality control and create wines with the concentration and character that larger commercial operations often struggle to achieve consistently.
