When 97pt, premium, old-vine, Barossa cabernets meets this price point, hesitation costs you the bottle. This is the kind of wine that defines a region and a generation. From vines older than most of those in Bordeaux itself - this is Maverick flexing their (substantial) muscles.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

This is Barossa cabernets with confidence. No bluff, no bluster - just impactful, classy, powerful red wine. The nose is all about seduction: cassis and dark plum take centre stage, flanked by cedar, clove, and a brush of bay leaf adding depth and distinction. Blackberry, blackcurrant and black cherry poke through, layered with vanillin oak, earthy undertones, macerated plums and a faint smokiness that adds real gravitas. The first sip is where the true power of this wine becomes apparent. Rich and concentrated, yet classically composed. Juicy dark fruits are laced with firm, chalky tannins - structured but never sharp. There’s tension and drive, with a hint of graphitey minerality humming through the long, commanding finish. One for the cellar, or a statement bottle for a serious occasion.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 'Old Vine' designation indicates these grapes come from mature vines, typically 30+ years old, which produce smaller yields but more concentrated, complex fruit. Combined with Barossa's warm climate and ancient soils, this creates wines with exceptional depth and structure. The 97-point Wine Orbit rating reflects how successfully this wine captures the power and elegance that old vine Barossa Cabernets are renowned for worldwide.

While approachable now, this full-bodied Cabernet blend will continue developing complexity for 8-12 years from vintage. The firm, chalky tannins and concentrated fruit structure suggest peak drinking will be around 2027-2031. The graphitey minerality and oak integration will become more harmonious with time, while the dark fruit flavours will evolve into more tertiary notes of leather, tobacco, and earth.

The wine's full body and firm tannins make it perfect for rich, protein-heavy dishes that can match its intensity. Think slow-cooked lamb shoulder, aged beef steaks, or game meats like venison. The cedar and spice notes complement herb-crusted roasts beautifully, while the wine's structure can cut through fatty dishes like duck confit or mature hard cheeses.

This concentrated Cabernet blend benefits significantly from decanting, especially if drinking within the next 2-3 years. Allow 1-2 hours of breathing time to soften the firm tannins and let the complex aromatics fully express themselves. The wine's youth means the cassis, cedar, and spice elements are still quite primary and will open up beautifully with proper aeration.

Cabernet blends typically feature Cabernet Sauvignon as the dominant variety, often blended with complementary grapes like Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, or Shiraz. In Barossa, it's common to add small amounts of Shiraz for extra richness and spice, or Merlot for softness. These blending varieties enhance complexity while maintaining Cabernet's signature structure and cassis character that defines this wine's powerful profile.
