Mourvèdre, mataro, monastrell. We don't care what you call it, as long as you save us a glass! This is one of the finest single-variety mourvèdres in the entire country. It's no surprises really, they've had it planted in the Barossa for over 150 years - of course they've got it down by now.

Why do we love this wine?

This is deeply a beautiful style of mourvèdre. Completely captivating from the first pour, to the very last drop. It opens on the nose with expressive dark plum, perfumed florals and a savoury hit of tapenade and cured meat, all wrapped in a warm hug of toasted spice and oak. The palate is as surprising as it is well-thought-out, silky, spiced, and supremely elegant. Blood plum, a hint of mint and vanillan oak glide across the palate with fine-grained tannins and a long, dusty finish. Medium-bodied with Burgundy-like finesse, it’s bold yet graceful—drinking beautifully now, but with a long, complex future ahead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mourvèdre is a distinctive Mediterranean variety that thrives in warm climates like the Barossa Valley. Unlike more common varieties, it produces wines with a unique combination of dark fruit intensity and savoury complexity, often displaying gamey, meaty characteristics alongside floral aromatics. This Ahren's Creek example showcases Mourvèdre's ability to balance power with elegance, delivering the variety's signature tapenade and cured meat notes while maintaining surprising finesse.

Serve this Mourvèdre at 16-18°C to allow its complex aromatics to fully express themselves. Decant for 30-60 minutes before serving to help the wine open up and soften the fine-grained tannins. The wine's savoury profile and medium body make it perfect for pairing with grilled lamb, charcuterie boards, or rich Mediterranean dishes that complement its tapenade and spiced characteristics.

The dual 95-point scores from Gary Walsh and Wine Orbit reflect this wine's exceptional balance of power and finesse - a rare achievement in Mourvèdre. Critics praised its Burgundy-like elegance despite being a full-bodied red, showcasing masterful winemaking that captures both the variety's inherent intensity and unexpected sophistication. The wine demonstrates perfect integration of fruit, oak, and tannins while maintaining the complexity that separates great wines from merely good ones.

This description highlights the wine's elegant structure and silky texture, qualities typically associated with premium Pinot Noir from Burgundy rather than robust Australian reds. Despite Mourvèdre's naturally powerful character, this wine achieves remarkable refinement through careful viticulture and winemaking, resulting in fine-grained tannins and graceful mouthfeel. It's a testament to the Barossa's ability to produce wines that combine New World fruit intensity with Old World sophistication.

While drinking beautifully now, this wine's structure and complexity suggest it will continue evolving for another 8-12 years. Mourvèdre is known for its excellent aging potential, and the wine's fine tannins, balanced acidity, and concentrated fruit provide the foundation for long-term cellaring. As it matures, expect the primary fruit flavours to integrate further with the savoury elements, developing additional tertiary characters like leather, earth, and dried herbs.
