This is a big deal. The term 'Ancestor Vines' is reserved only for vineyards planted over 125 years ago. This places them as right up there with some of the oldest living grenache vines in the entire world, and in this case, thanks to the meticulous work of Maverick Wines, they absolutely live up to the hype.

Why do we love this wine?

As a general rule, the older the vines, the better the wines. But why? Well, the simplified answer is that as grape vines mature they begin to produce less fruit. As a result, all of the energy, all of the sun and soil, all of the flavour is condensed into less grapes, so you end up with highly concentrated, perfectly balanced fruit with the capacity to create extremely low quantity, extremely high quality wines that could out-last religion. An exquisite texture unfolds across your palate, each sip revealing new depths while maintaining that stunning fruit purity that separates the good from the genuinely great. Persistent, velvety, and utterly mesmerising - the kind that of wine that lingers on your palate long after the glass is empty, and lingers on your mind even longer.

" Pristine and exquisitely expressed, the wine shows ripe cherry, plum, violet and mixed spice characters on the nose, followed by a delicious palate offering layers of silky texture and a persistent velvety finish. A stunning beauty displaying outstanding fruit purity and poise. At its best: 2024 to 2038. 97 Points." - Sam Kim, Wine Orbit

Frequently Asked Questions

Ancestor vines are old vine plantings that have developed deep, complex root systems over decades. These mature vines naturally self-regulate their crop load, producing fewer but more concentrated grapes that deliver exceptional flavour intensity. The reduced yield means all the vine's energy goes into fewer bunches, creating fruit with remarkable depth and the ability to produce wines with extraordinary longevity and complexity that younger vines simply cannot match.

Barossa's warm continental climate and ancient soils create ideal conditions for Grenache, allowing the variety to develop its characteristic cherry and plum flavours while maintaining elegant structure. The region's old vine heritage means many Grenache plantings have had generations to adapt to the terroir, producing wines with distinctive rose petal aromatics and silky textures. This contrasts with cooler regions where Grenache can struggle to ripen fully, or hotter areas where it may lose its delicate floral qualities.

This wine's cherry and plum flavours with rose petal notes make it incredibly food-friendly, particularly with Mediterranean cuisine, roasted lamb with herbs, or duck breast with cherry sauce. The medium body and velvety texture complement dishes that aren't too heavy - think grilled vegetables, charcuterie boards, or even spiced Middle Eastern dishes. The wine's elegant structure won't overpower delicate flavours while still having enough presence to stand up to moderately rich preparations.

The exceptional 97-point rating reflects the wine's combination of old vine concentration, perfect vintage conditions in 2020, and Maverick Wines' boutique winemaking approach. Critics particularly value wines that demonstrate both power and elegance - this Grenache delivers intense fruit flavours while maintaining the refined, persistent finish that separates great wines from merely good ones. The rating also recognises the rarity and quality of genuine ancestor vine fruit, which produces wines with complexity that can't be replicated from younger plantings.

Given the old vine source and the wine's concentrated nature, this Grenache has excellent cellaring potential of 10-15 years or more. The 2020 vintage was particularly favourable in Barossa, providing the structure and acidity needed for long-term ageing. As it matures, expect the primary cherry and plum flavours to evolve into more complex secondary characters like leather, spice, and dried fruits, while the rose petal aromatics will integrate and become more subtle. The wine's natural balance suggests it will reward patient cellaring.
