Affordable pinot is becoming harder and harder to get hold of, so it's safe to say that a 'best in show' winner that's easy on your wallet is a near miracle.

Why do we love this wine?

Pinot is a really tough grape to handle at the best of times, let alone when on a budget. Every now and then, though, you do find some gems. This is one of those. Made by the team at Matahiwi, who are known to over-deliver, this pinot does, and then some! Light and bright, it ticks the fruit, complexity and pinosity boxes with a flourish. A firm favourite of our customers and staff, excitement levels get pretty high when Matahiwi enters the building.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Matahiwi Reserve stands out because it achieves the holy grail of budget Pinot Noir - delivering genuine complexity and varietal character without compromise. The Wairarapa region's cool climate allows for extended ripening, developing the delicate balance between fruit intensity and earthy undertones that defines quality Pinot. Its impressive 96-point rating and Trophy win at the International Cool Climate Wine Show proves it punches well above its weight class.

The interplay between strawberry and blackberry creates a beautiful spectrum from bright red fruit to deeper, more brooding dark fruit characteristics. This combination is enhanced by subtle allspice notes, which add warmth and complexity typical of well-made Wairarapa Pinot Noir. The medium body provides the perfect framework to showcase both the wine's approachable fruit character and its more sophisticated structural elements.

Wairarapa's cool, maritime climate creates perfect conditions for Pinot Noir's notoriously finicky nature. The region's long, dry autumns allow grapes to ripen slowly while retaining crucial acidity, resulting in wines with both intensity and elegance. The diverse soil types, from river terraces to hillside sites, contribute to the complexity that makes Wairarapa Pinot Noir increasingly recognised on the international stage.

Pinosity refers to those distinctive characteristics that make a wine unmistakably Pinot Noir - the silky texture, bright acidity, and complex interplay of fruit, earth, and spice. Many budget Pinot Noirs lack this essential character, often tasting generic or overly simple. This Matahiwi Reserve successfully captures that elusive pinosity, delivering the varietal's signature elegance and complexity that wine lovers seek.

Serve this Pinot Noir slightly below room temperature, around 14-16°C, to highlight its delicate fruit aromatics and maintain its fresh acidity. The medium body makes it versatile for food pairing - try it with roasted duck, mushroom risotto, or aged cheeses. Decanting isn't necessary, but allowing it to breathe for 15-20 minutes after opening will help the allspice and fruit complexity fully develop.
