Why do we love this wine?

For pinot at this price, it’d be fair not to expect much. It’s just a really tough grape to handle at the best of times, let alone when on a budget. Every now and then, though, you do find some gems. This is one of those.

Made by the team at Matahiwi, who are known to over-deliver, this pinot does, and then some! Light and bright, it ticks the fruit, complexity and pinosity boxes with a flourish. A firm favourite of our customers and staff, excitement levels get pretty high when Matahiwi enters the building.

Pristine and brightly fruited, the wine shows dark plum, sweet raspberry, floral, subtle spice and toasted nut aromas, leading to a succulent palate displaying juicy fruit flavours together with fleshy texture and fine tannins, finishing long and delectable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Pinot Noir is notoriously difficult to produce well at accessible price points due to its thin skin and sensitivity to climate and handling. This Matahiwi Reserve demonstrates that New Zealand's Wairarapa region has the ideal cool climate conditions to express Pinot's delicate character without the premium price tag of Burgundy. The 94-point Wine Orbit rating confirms this wine punches well above its weight class, delivering the complexity and 'pinosity' that many budget Pinots struggle to achieve.

The Wairarapa region, where Matahiwi's vineyards are located, benefits from a cool maritime climate with significant diurnal temperature variation - warm days for ripening and cool nights that preserve acidity and delicate aromatics. This climate closely mirrors Burgundy's conditions, allowing Pinot Noir to develop its characteristic bright fruit flavours while maintaining the textural complexity and savoury elements that define quality examples of this variety.

This flavour profile represents classic cool-climate Pinot Noir at its best, where red berry fruits (strawberry) provide freshness and primary fruit character, while darker notes (blackberry) add depth and structure. The allspice component comes from both the grape's natural spice characteristics and likely some subtle oak influence, creating a textured, savoury wine that balances fruit purity with complexity - exactly what you want from quality Pinot Noir.

This wine is crafted under the guidance of Vineyard Manager Karina Southey, representing the growing influence of women in New Zealand's wine industry. Women often bring different perspectives to viticulture and winemaking, frequently emphasising elegance, balance and terroir expression over power - qualities that align perfectly with Pinot Noir's delicate nature. Supporting women-made wines helps diversify an industry traditionally dominated by men while often discovering unique stylistic approaches.

Serve this wine slightly below room temperature (around 14-16°C) to highlight its bright fruit character while allowing the textural, savoury elements to shine through. The medium body and balanced acidity make it incredibly food-friendly - pair with roasted duck, salmon, mushroom dishes, or aged cheeses. Decanting for 30 minutes can help integrate the flavours, though this wine is approachable immediately upon opening thanks to its well-managed tannin structure.
